Did it ever go faster than 120, since you've had it?

What happens when you accellerate full throttle, up to 120?
Is it a gradual slowing of accelleration, as 120 approaches, or is it like the the car hits a wall
and just plain stops increasing speed all of a sudden?

i can plant the foot from a dead stop at it takes off fine and hauls a*** up to 120 and just stops climbing the revs dont get any higher once it hits 120, ive had it passed 120 down the strip on a number of occasions. i just dunno what the problem is, i havent fiddled with anything besides the cd player, it just gets to 120 and just doesnt go any further, it's kinda embaressing because last night i went to test and tune and ran both the falcon and the old datsun and the datsun went a hell of alot quicker and it's only got extractors on it. i really dont know what the problem is. my only option at the moment of changeing the ecu is to use a haltech i brought that was ment for the datsun but i never used it, and i dont really have the time to install it i need it for work.

ok so i just took it for another drive this time it was cold went up the dirt road and it went up to 140 so i backed off cause it was getting a little happy in the rear on the dirt, but i drove around untill it got hot planted the foot and it just stops climbing at 120. so it's good cold and crap when it's hot.

Well, it needs air fuel and spark to run, whats it not getting enough of? Sounds like you have ruled out air.

Whats your fuel reg like? was the correct filter used and installed the orrect way for flow?

I know I am clutching at straws, but no more than yourself.

yes evreything is flowing the right way, pressure regulator is right, pump is correct one, air filter is clean and new, i have checked everything i can think of and everything mentioned in the workshop manual, ran it diagnostic mode and checked for faults nothing came up, only thing i can think of may be the ecu is running fine when the car is cold but when it gets up to noraml running temp it may be telling things to do the wrong thing thats the only thing i can think of and i cant just swap the ecu for another because finding a pre smart lock ecu for tbi 3.9 eb s1 is hard.

The cat is gutted Cozza has already advised of that. Could be ECU if you are confident you have rulled everything else out. I have an EBManual ecu, I know this does not help. But its nice to share.

Eb II xr6. Smart lock. Your welcome to try it, where are you located, may be worth looking at a smart lock bypass module, it will open your options up alot, shiftkits.com.au sell em, and there should be instructions around on how to make your own.
