It definitely isn't for starting your car from the second battery, but it might be ok for charging a 2nd battery that is in the boot for an audio setup?

The setup my g/f's brother installed on his hilux recently has a big solenoid that is attached to a small switch on the dash to isolate the 2nd battery. It has 100amp red cables to & from this solenoid, connecting both batteries and a 100amp earth cable from the 2nd battery to the chassis. The hilux can be switched onto the 2nd battery to start it, or to help run all the extra lights and the electric winch.

Cheers

This is basicly the same as my setup.
The solenoid links my batteries when the ignition is in the "ON" position.
The solenoid has 2 60amp cables going to it (1 from master batt and 1 from alt).
Then 100amp cables with 60amp fuses to limit the drian on the master batt while starting if second batt is flat.
I have had to jump start my car before with this setup when my master batt died.

ok thanks heaps for the input all.

I have no intention of trying to start my car off the second battery. i am just wanting it to run my secondary amp. i thought the system was alright because it would cut off the second battery once it hit a certain charge. I will be running voltmeters on both the batteries as a just in case as well as a relay just in case i notice the second battery running high or the primary battery running low for any reason. i just thought that it was a good little system with cheaper and easy installation that trying to run a convention dual battery setup.

does anybody think that this would mess with my ECU at all? I dont see why it would but then again im no expert..

No...well maybe if it was hooked up wrong? Just disconnect both batteries before installing and you should be right.

I use Redarc Smart solenoids for second battery systems. They have voltage sensing circuits which join the batteries together at approximately 13.8 volts and isolate at 12. something volts.A good system which is reliable,Australian and has warranty. It only takes 2 wires and a couple of circuit breakers and is very easy to install.Cheers Kevman.

i had a look at the Redarc solenoids but they are more for heavy duty sort of use by the looks.. im just trying to run my sound system off a different battery to my main one so that i dont flatten it at all..

30amp may not keep up with a decent sized amp.
