Anyone know what causes the shudder in the power steering on a 94 ED.
Mechanic told me my P/S pump was weeping oil so he replaced it with a reco one & fitted a new hose & its exactly the same, so obviously I won't be going back to that shop. :x

could be anything bad bearings in the pully or the pully is out of alignment.

mine does the same thing, I'm thinking it's more like the rack is shagged (not much else it could be)..

First of all buy a gregory's workshop manual and then you don't need to worry about taking into to a mechanic.

Power Steering shudder is generally caused by a weak pump or because the seals in the steering rack are not sealing and letting fluid by-pass.

I had a leak that had to be fixed by ENZED (no factory P/S hoses available) then had a whine and shudder which I assumed to be the pump, so I ended up putting two more reco pumps on before I realized there was nothing wrong with my original pump! It was the hose all along. I found the last kelpro (factory style) hose repco had in the country!.........All fixed!

Hope this helps you avoid the annoying and expensive 6 months of troubleshooting I had.

Its a reco pump so would assume the bearings & pulley are ok!
I do have a Gregorys manual but as I have Pneumonia at the moment & I'm unable to do bugger all & it was one of 3 things it got knocked back for the roadworth so I thought better to get them to do it & get it passed.

I was also thinking maybe the rack is shagged, has no oil leaks that are visible but maybe just worn inside?.

Also- are all P/S hoses for this model(94 ED) the same or is there a high pressure hose available from someone?

The shudder can be a couple of things.....one big one is wheel alignment...another is tyre/rim size.
Another one is the rotor housing in the pump can get undulations so the vanes end up goin in & out really fast in the rotor centre. That usually happens from very low oil level.
Both my EA & ED did it after puting on bigger tyres and a wheel alignment set up for fast cornerning.
They didn't do it before I did those things.

I had a similar problem, turned out to be a seized power steering tensioner pulley. $20 fix
