Hi guys,
What does this red bcm control?,
I'm having problems starting mine sometime and i have to tap and sometime hit under the handbrake to start it sometimes.
Would this have anything to do with this Red BCM?.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Jason.

The Red/Orange BEM in EB11-ED is actually called the 'Smartlock Module'. It is known to be a problem when some of the solder joins go dry and crack, causing intermittent start problems.

By 'Thumping' it you can get the car to start.

Replace it with another one, or get yours repaired.

Cheers

I don't think so. Need a smartlock bypass to cancel it out.

Cheers

So when they say they disable smart lock what do they mean? (FALSE ADVERTISING)

Do you mean the J3 chip suppliers or the smarlock bypass guys?

I have read about J3 chips programmed that disable the ECU side of smartlock, so you can plug a EL ECU into a EA or EB that doesn't have smartlock & have it run the car, which wouldn't happen if the ECU is expecting to find smartlock gear in the car.

A smartlock bypass will stop smartlock from working (disable it). It is useful in some situations. Personally I'd prefer to keep my smartlock working.

A mate of mine is looking at sticking a ED or EL I6 & 4spd auto into a late 70's cortina. Easiest way to do that is a whole loom transplant, but if he doesn't want smartlock the bypass would disable it for him.

Cheers

Got it!! That sux i thought id found a cheap a** way out lol , oh well ill fix it soon and it will be behind me....just another hundred or so spent, im looking at $960 for new tire rod ends, upper and lower ball joints, strut bushes, bearings and seals! apparantly spending $420 on struts last week wasnt enough the car went all out.
Cars are so expensive to keep running right. :x
Ya mates car idea sounds good, is he gonna use a hybrid or E series head?

That $960 sounds a little pricey, but i'm sure their is lots of labour included in that price. I did all my front end a couple years ago now, cost me about $850 in parts, and i did it myself. My mate will probably go with an E series head, he will more than likely be getting an engine from a car i'll wreck, and it will be a budget buildup, so we may even port it our self. lol. Anyway, back on topic.

Cheers

Lot of misinformation in this thread (which I randomly found via Google).

A J3 chip CAN be used as a Smartlock Bypass to disable Smartlock and/or Smartshield in EB-AU ECUs. See http://www.tiperformance.com.au/products.html#CustomPreProgrammed for more info.
