Hi mate not to sure about your not starting problem. But if you have fuel and spark it has to be electrical side of things. Have you checked your sensors? sounds something like that if it cranks then goes to start then cranks normal agian. But the way i test the alternator is start the car turn the head lights on then take a batt termanal off if the lights are still on the alternator is charging if not they are running straight off of your batt. Hope this helps.

Just with regards to smartlock - 89 EA... no smartlock. Not until the later EBII's. But he did say it's an ED... so it is an ED, yes?

As for your problem, if the car is cranking, the alternator isn't an issue (not to say it's working, but it won't affect your car starting or not).

First of, as TerroristGHIA has said, clean/replace the plugs. After that, turn the car onto reds and listen to the fuel pump, make sure it's supplying fuel, then pull a lead, and stick a plug on it. Crank the engine, make sure you're getting spark.

After that.... now here's the really important part.... post your findings so we can cyber ponder about this further.

It can be a whole range of issues, from wires, to sensors, to grounds, to relays, to ECU, fuel pump, plugs, filters, apologies to anyone I've missed.

And don't strip it just cos it won't start... that's the easy way out... fix it first.

Cheers

im thinking maybe the timing could be out
as both the power steering belt and alterantor belt snapped
maybe this has something to do with it?

and any ideas on how the bloody hell a tensioner pulley would seize?

.. what exactly happened in terms of check for spark and fuel... you have both?

basic engine principles fuel (right amount) + air (right amount) + spark (as much as possible, with the extra timing element :-D) = BANG!

So, you're possibilities are fairly limited.

If you were my neighbour I'd help out, but f**k going to Blue mountains!

As for the timing, it is electronically controlled. The belts have nothing to do with it. There is a mechanical base, but unless somehow the belt slipped, turned into a 10mm socket, undid the bracket, and turned the distributor...I don't think the timing would'be changed. But that all depends on the amount of LSD consumed.

In all seriuosness, it's probably something stupid like a relay or a plug.

That'll teach me to post without reading the whole post.

Well then, it's either lack of fuel, or timing, or something more serious.

By the sounds of things - you had a short somewhere killing something electrical. Which might/might not have got you into Limp Home Mode, loosing all power, and locking the timing to 10 degrees.

Hm.. how did you check for fuel? Maybe the fuel pump is dead/ the wiring to it got screwed, so now it only leaking through enough to get it to stumble.

Theres a video somewhere of me doing a similar check - by pouring fuel into my intake and starting the car to check if it was fuel.. I would recommend AGAINST this method.. (it was funny at the time however)

Were you just randomly driving - as in, didn't play with it before hand?

Hi mate just read through your posts again and are you 100% sure it is getting enough fuel? Sounds like fuel which is why it will try and start then go back to cranking over and would also explain why you lost all acceleration power. I can really see it being the spark plugs would be a bit odd for them all to bite the dust at the same time, even if it was just one it would still run just rough as guts.

Would it still start in Limp home mode?

yeah - should do no worries. LHM is like 10 degrees timing static... which is what you're idling at anyway.. (unless you're an aussie 302 at 30 degrees :-0)

It would just accelerate like s**t, and make all sorts of funny noises...
