Hi recentley changed my head for a reco and also did the rings and big ends. now after 600km its still blows smoke. What happens is when i am idling for a bit it builds up and then when I rev it it puffs out. i have checked the plugs and some of them are a bit carboned up guessing this is due to oil burning. It only blows after it has time to buid up a bloke told me today that its not likely to be rings because it would blow all the time.? would it be valve seals? because of the way its behaving. Or could it be a mistake in fitting the oil rings. Also i was told that it bmay be possible to changed the seals without pulling off the head by using compressed air in the cylinder through the spark plug hole and pressurising the cylinder. Is this possible? please help as it cost me over a grand to do the job and i dont have any more money. regards :oops

You don't say what colour the smoke is. If its oil burning the smoke will be blue. Carbon build up on the plugs could be indicate the engine running rich.

Yes Valve stems seals can be done without removing the head. Compressed air into the cylinder through the sparkplug hole is the way. You will need a suitable spring compressor.

Did you clean the ring grooves properly??? Did you make sure the ring end gaps were misaligned???? Did you hone the cylinders, getting a nice crosshatch pattern???? Did you scrub the bores properly after honing them, to remove the grit stuck in the metal.????

hi yer did all that. i think there may be a problem with the head gasket as it appears to be leaking oil not sure but do you think its possible that it could leak into the cylinders as well as down the side of the block near #2 piston. also when i spray carbi/throttle body cleaner on the filter and let it run for a few Ks it seems to clean up and the smoke is minimised if not totally gone. but i did do the same the other day and the plugs seem to carbon up after a day or 2 of just putting around town. any ideas im thinking the block face may have been worn as it looked like someone used a stone on it to clean it and i have been told by the engineeer thats not good as it leaves the block uneven.
regards

Dunno, hard to say whats going on without seeing it, or having seen the job get done. Oil leaks occur on the left hand side of the block, and at the front on the right side of the block, both at head gasket height. Water leaks occur on the right side of the block, (from gasket only).

I was told today that if it blows smoke after idling for a minute then its valve seals and not rings. Also told that if it was rings it would blow all the time is that right. is there any tests i can do to try and work out why this is happening. i compression tested it a couple of weeks and they were all an even 150psi.

Did you do a "wet test" when you did a comp. test??? 150psi seems a little low. With rings, they blow smoke all the time, when they are well & trully stuffed. Slightly worn, or a broken ring can make smoke but not all the time.
Valve stem seals make smoke when you back off. And if the engine is hot when you pull up and turn off, leave sit for 4 or so hours, and then you start it, smoke comes out.
Have you had it hot, and idling and with the oil cap off, is it "breathey"???? This suggests rings/cracked pistons.

Its at the top of the pic..............A 1935 Willys "77" engine. Produces 48HP...............And No, not a Jeep..........The Jeep engines were different.
The engine is a 77 series and were fitted to a car, in this case, a Roadster called a 77.

hi thanks for that i did what you said and not breathy at all with and without the pCV valve and it did just what you said when i rev not much smoke if any but about 3-5 seconds later heaps puffing out. Do you know whether you can change the seals without pulling off the head one bloke on FM has said yes and the guy at repco was who first suggested it to me. i am a little dubius as what happens if the valve drops i assume your stuffed. how long do you reckon a mechanic would take to do this? because aint no way i am going to attempt it. regards

It would take about 3hrs to do. The valve stem seals are not cheap.
