Hey everyone reading, for those of you who may be looking to buy a new camshaft, not a regrind, you might want to jump on the next cam blank you can get your hands on. Tighe engineering up here in QLD have been chasing cam blanks form the manufacturer in the US for me for around 4 months now. The US supplier came back to them on Monday saying that they are not willing to produce the blank at present due to a lack of interest, small order sizes! They are not willing to retool and calibrate there machines for a small run of blanks.

What does this mean?

It means for those of us that want to buy a proper camshaft, not a regrind, it is now virtually impossible unless it is already ground or if the company doing the grind has blanks in stock. Tighe rang all their contacts in AUS and NZ for a blank and they were able to find a company in NZ that had two blanks in stock. That is right out of everyone they know they found two blanks!! I am lucky enough to have one of those blanks with my name on it.

Crow, who are the main supplier for AUS and NZ are also apparently out of stock!

This is not to say that this will mean a perminate stop of production, but until larger order numbers come in there will not be a porduction run in the US.

A Huge concern for us I6 fans!!!!!!!!!

Man that sucks, i remember Wade Cams was having issues with getting in blanks from their suppliers but didnt think things were gonna turn out this bad.. Most of the cam places over here in NZ do regrinds for the i6's rather then grinding billets

Do you know the supplier in NZ by any chance? Only places i know of over here that may have blanks in stock would be Franklin Cams or Kelford cams as they seem to do a lot of big cams which would probably need to be ground from a blank..

LOL not quite that simple, It is the hardening process that makes it a problem. Nobody can do it properly. The US company is the only one who have got it right, hence the fact that they are the only supplier.

I am not sure which company it is in NZ, I know it isn't Kelford though, but I can guarantee you one thing you won't be able to get them to give you that last blank. I offered him a huge mount of dosh for it and they refused to even think about it. They are not a Blank manufacturer the are just a cam profiler.

I don't understand, i have seen heaps of people wanting blank camshafts, it has to be something other than demand surely.

blame all the people with b**ch profiles being scared of regrinds using them all up
sucks for people that are after serious cams beyond the scope of a regrind.

i think there are a few people that went with re grinds because they couldnt get billets..
although that might have only been maybe 4 or 5 people on here?
which is obviously not enough.
but crow cams are still supplying billets.. although they might have stocked up???

I've seen them peel.....wear really quickly....but that was with old school stuff, like Clevo's, Holdens, Chevs.....push rod & lifter/cam follower type.
It might be good will a roller on there....and not too severe spring pressures.
Even a billet cam will peel with excessive spring pressures.
I modify the lifters on the old school stuff so as to have an oil jet going onto the lobes, makes them last longer, and maybe worth 1 or 2 HP, too.

The cam lobes are only hard for so deep....so when you grind them ( depending on profile wanted, ), that depth of hardness is reduced, and its not easy to re-harden them, without playing with the temper of the rest of the cam.
Does anybody know if there is a mob that " Laser hardens" the cam lobes??????????
At work, we get splindles for mine dump trucks, where the wheel bearings skate around on the journals, Laser hardened.
It gets done by a mob called "Austchrome"....in Mackay, Qld.
I don't know how they do it, or the process involved.

i've had 2 regrind in my 4Ls, 70,000km on one, around 30,000km on the other.
both with aftermarket springs, one was an RPD cam with a massive amount of shims, the other was JMM Dev3HL with 1 extra stock shim.
no dramas, would be people who have done more kms then that too...
