G'day,
Don't kill me I have used the serch and done some research!!

I am gonna get a 1636 wade camshaft put in my ef,
I have read that you need to replace the shims cause it's a regrind.

I would need 12(1.9mmx11mm) shims and are about $60-$70 from ford,
But the mechanic who will be installing it says that I can use the shims I currently have in my ef and don't need to buy any cause I'm just swapping it over, if someone can help me out that would be awesome.

He may just be pulling my d**k also but he said I should get a new rocker cover gasket. What you reckon also? (they are rubber, and I have reused it once before when I took it off.)

Thanks guys, I love this site!! :)

you are ment to add a second shim to the one already fitted to make up for what has been ground off the cam..

tell the dumb a** mechanic that it needs a second shim in each rocker, and if you do get him to fit the cam tell him if he dont fit the extra shim and it rattles its a** of he will be doing the job right free of charge....

why not change it yourself??

Yeah I thought about doing it myself, like it seems pretty straight forward and all.
I went down to pick a part wreckers and got a standard camshaft to swap it over to wade cams when I get my 1636, like I'm good at working with my hands and all just not the most confident person on with adding the extra shims.
(Wait, I'm not even gonna lie I don't even really know what a shim looks like lol)

If there is a step by step manual on how to install it with shims I would be more than happy to do it, but Ive already had a quick browse and could only really find anything!!

Yeah f**k that mechanic, If I don't do it myself I'll end up finding a different mechanic!!
I'm happy to listen/ learn!!
Thanks troyman :)

go back to the pick a part and grab the shims from under the lifters on the rocker gear u grabbed the cam from. saves paying $60 from ford

Ok I know this is a different site,
But is this a good enough step by step manual on how to add a regrind camshaft and extra shims?
*I know you have to cable tie the chain also lol

http://www.trueblueford.com/discussion_ ... php?t=2862

Seems pretty straight forward and easy to do,
What you guys reckon?!?
cheers- callum

it helps to have another pair of hands there to hold tension on the cam gear while it is off to change the cam. i just put 977b's in mine and a mates on the weekend and it was a hell of a lot easier with him there to hold the gear. i used this guide from boosted. http://www.boostedfalcon.net/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=1877

On an engineer's advice, I used washers as the second shims, and they have worked great for several years now. From memory, the ones to use are 5mm (about 10mm diameter and 1mm thick) in 316 stainless steel (sometimes called A4). Any fastener specialist should have these. The stainless is very hard, so doesn't tend to flatten or wear.

I have heard it's important that you pay attention to the orientation of the original shim and put it back in the same way, with the washer or new shim between the original shim and the rocker arm - so the original shim is against the lifter.

Ok,
I put the 1636 cam shaft in and at first it ran like s**t, it picked up a little but still has this annoying as f**k ticking noise and the car has now stalled a couple of times. I've been told not to drive it if it's ticking and to start all over again, and ive heard also to leave it running for a while and it will run rough then become alot smooth after time. Personal opinions or experiences/ advice would be awesome. Thanks

how loud is the tick?? is it a light tick or a loud clack???
did you fit the extra shim in each rocker?
if its a mild to light tick let it run for a while, usually it should quieten down after a while..

did you disconnect the battery??
due to the minor changes in engine vacuum from the new cam the idle may be s**t untill the ecu re learns its idle...

Yeah I fitted the extra shims, it's when I rev the engine to about 2000rpm it honestly sounds like a lawn mower  and when I even change it to drive it drops so low it sounds like it's gonna stall and it is just stalls when changing gears.. :(

I'm under the impression now that doing this upgrade was a bad Idea .. :(

22nm should be fine, the upside down shims will be what is causing your ticking noise as it prevents the oil flow or something like that

Geez!!
Ok well I took it apart again and I realized that 2 of the rocker arms have cracked and were causing the annoying ticking noise. So I put in a reconditioned rocker and made sure the extra shims were in the right way.

Started her up and was chugging quiet a bit and the ticking was completely gone, was running ruff for a short time then it stalled tried to start it up again but won't click over!!

Could this be the battery? I have it on charge at the moment. Hopefully this works :s

Alright I got it going purs real nice, but it is idling like a prick and I took it for a drive and I have to be constantly accelerating or other wise I will stall.. Should I just leave it running for a bit so the ecu can learn what it's running with??

Thanks for the advice so far, and any other personal opinions would be awesome!! 
