Hi there folks,

Have noticed that on the hot days we have had, the car is getting really hot around town with limited air flow to cool the engine coolant down naturally. Its getting right up near the hot mark. The coolant temp sensor is new, no fault codes and the fans kick in when i do the cooling fans test KOEO also when i disconnect the coolant temp plug. Tested all the relays and they are switching and reading the same OHMS when on and off. Also i rebuilt the motor about 5k ago too. Lost at what the prob could be? any suggestions?

Cheers Joel

Hi Joel, I Had a similar problem with my gauge reading high after a BBM conversion in my XG. I found that it was a earth problem. Check you have good earth to everything. My ute wasn"t running hot it was just a bad earth.

bad earths, might also be thermal breakdown somewhere. are you testing when it's hot ?

how do you mean "testing when its hot" what tests would i run when its hot. The fans work i know that and my temp gauge goes up and down so im confused as to what tests to run. Obviously the ecu triggers the 3 fan speeds when a certain resistance value is sent to the ecu. Could the ecu have failed? as i said before i tested the fans with the KOEO test and by disconnecting the plug on the CTS. Very lost as where to go next?

i mean testing at the actual fan connector plug when it's hot to see if it's receiving an appropriate voltage etc. if it isn't then the problem can either be in the harness or the ecu, testing at either ends will tell you that also. Just be careful running it hot without any fans obviously....

Well I'm all outta ideas now, I refitted my old coolant temp sensor and still no fans, fitted a different computer and still no fans. The fans still kick in tho when i remove the plug from the coolant temp sensor which would indicate it wasn't a ECU fault. So please if u have experienced this at all a kick in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Joel

I am sure there was a bloke on these forums with similar problems. The thread went for about 3 pages. It end up being the actual thermo fans. EF's have a 2-speed fan and a normal fan. (different to EL's) The 2-speed fan was shorting out at the highest speed causing the problem. Try doing a search for the thread????
