i found this on ford australia forumns

knocking in the LSD's was a common problem in the EF-EL falcons. Ford didnt put in a lubricant which stops the cones binding up, why they didnt put it in i dont know, and thats whats causing the clunk.
Ive got an LSD in my falcon, and right from the moment i bought it i noticed a fairly loud knock when accelerating, cornering, decelerating etc. got really sick of it after a couple of months, went down to ford and got an additive for the diff that stopped the cones binding up, now it works fine. no noise whatsoever. cost me $11. took 5 mins to put in and noticed the difference by the time i got to the end of the court. hasnt played up since.

anyone know where to buy it? or what its called?

I believe it's called Redline Friction Modifier (redlineoil.com.au). You can "tune" your diff by adding 5mls at a time until the noise goes away, running it a few kms between each dose. That way you get rid of the noise while maintaining maximum limited slip.

I'll have to try this additive out on my diff, see if it makes any improvement. At the moment I get a little bit of whine, not much though. My main issue is that damn solenoid in the gear box that makes it clunk. But even then it's not nearly as bad as others I have been in.

Also Fordnut1988 the best way to check is on the back on the diff hat there is a fill bolt there should be a metal tag on that bolt that says LSD.

Ok so got under the car and got these two pictures, hope they help. As you look at the back of the car this is the part of the diff you see. If it's an LSD Diff it should have the tag on the left hand side of the diff hat/cover next to the watts link arm.

Image

On the tag there should be written: LSD HIGH PERFORMANCE

If there is no tag, jack the back tyres off the ground (in neutral, handbrake off) and turn one tyre by hand. If the other one turns the opposite way, it is NOT LSD. If it turns the same direction, it IS LSD.

No worries man :)
And as efxr6wagon said that's also another great way to check if you want to be absolutely certain. Just incase some idiot took the tag off.

The lip that you were lifting the car by are these the metal strips along the side of the car?

If so I have bent mine as well :( Only reason why I left them is that I am going to put side skirts on eventually.
