Ill have a suss if starter is getting power but I don't think it would be.. I have changed the starter and the start works and starts the car if I remove the starter relay and bridge terminal 87 and 30 at the base the relay would usually plug into

Starter sounds ok as he said when he bridges the relay terminals, it starts and runs.

Check the earth on the relay. If noot getting an earth, you won't complete the circuit to activate the relay. Have you tried a new relay?

Yeah that's what I was thinking because yeah starter works fine when terminals mentioned before are bridged. How do I check if it is earthing properly, I only have a 12v test light to test, can I do it with that?

use a rivet or similar into the earth terminal and clip your test light onto that

Thanks mate will go test soon.

So just I confirm. Terminal 30 should have power at all times
Terminal 85 when car is trying to crank and both 86 and 87 earth pins?

Sorry for all the questions, electrical isn't my specialty and I have tried everything I can think of

30 constant power, 85 or 86 will be power from the key, 85 or 86 (whichever hasnt got power from key) will be earth and 87 should be the line TO the starter

Mate I have resolved the cutting out at 3500 rpm issue (timing was out) the car will now not start, as the starter motor will not engage.

Starter, ignition , Bem, crank angle sensor, ecu all relays have been changed since the car stopped and wouldn't start again.

Ok so should pin 87 light up at any point if I test for power or earth?

pin 87 is the signal line to the starter, it MAY show an earth, but it shouldnt show power. the earth you want to check is pin 86. if you dont have earth at 86, and you have power from the key at 85, it wont be switching the relay

Okay so first of all I did the test on my falcon which is up and running to give my self a base. It had power to pin 30 always, and power to pin 85 when cranking. I then hooked my test light up to the positive on the battery and tested for earths.
Pin 87 (starter) had constant earth, and pin 86 showed a quick flash of earth (light lite up green for a second) when the ignition was switched from the off to on position and vide versa. It did not stay on while attempting to crank.

I then moved onto the busted car now that I had a base to go off. All results were the same, EXCEPT that pin 86 never showed a flash like my running car did. Not when I switched ignition from off to on or vide versa. I am assuming this is the problem, am I not having an earth??

What could be some of the causes of that (if that is what my problem is)

Just went out and tested again. The car that is running had earth on pin 86 constantly when the igniton was switched to accessories. The reason it only flashed before I assume was due to fact that I was turning it from on the full on (cranking position) and the earth light goes back out when you attempt to crank.

I tested the busted car and it never has an earth on pin 86, so I am guessing this is my problem!

What the hell could be causing this?

Hi guys just another update now I have some daylight to play in.

I can now get the key to start the car ONLY when I have the starter relay removed and then with a wire bridging pins pins 87 and 85.

Pin 85 only receives power when the car is attempted to be cranked so can I just leave this bandaid fix and not use the relay at all? I only need the car to be running (person wants to buy it, they don't care how I get it going as long as it goes, just don't wanna leave them on the side of the road.

I am a little confused as when pins 85 and 87 are bridged (with relay removed) pin 86 has an earth but when I remove that wire bridging 85 and 87 I lose earth in terminal 86???

If I just leave it as it is with no relay and starting with pins 85 87 bridged with a wire this wont last long will it?

Would wiring an earth from the neg on battery to the earth wire at base of starter relay terminal???
Any help would be great!!!

Just a thought.....does the engine turn over whilst holding the key on crank, and tapping the dash in the area where the parkbrake would be if it were an earlier model.......????.....thats where the BEM lives.

Got the jacks of trying to figure this bull s**t and why pin 86 was not receiving an earth so I decided to run an earth cable directly off where the negative terminal earths on the overflow/ battery tray to the wires in the base of pin 86.

Works a treat and now at least I am using the relay so I can not see any major issues arising?
