Have recently done an engine change in my 96 ef wagon and ever since it wont find a gear unless revving at 2000rpm and i cannot figure it out, all help is appreciated..

check the transmission has fluid?

can you hear it change gear while driving. might be in limp home mode??

LHM should keep you below ~3000 and in 3. Should have no issues engaging.
Could be a solenoid. Do a search on what solenoid does what and have a look at the engaging(?) solenoid.
