AU and newer wheels are a different offset and will not fir on the front of an EF without adaptors which I would not reccommend. The EL XR wheels will fit and are legal and your speedo will be fine and you shouldnt have any issues with cops or insurance.

the stud patern of AU or newer are the same but the offset is different and will make the wheel sit inside the wheel arch further making the wheels sit closer together from side to side which unless it it ledd them a certain messurement would make them illegal.

Spacers will make the AU+ wheels fit where standar wheels would but spacers are a little dodgey and depending or which state your in and the police officer who might pull you up interprites the rule you could be defected. If you look inside the drivers side door of your car you should be able to find a sticker with info on tyre and wheel sizes.

I have an EL GLi wagon and it has 225/50r16 listed on the sticker. Size wise with the right offset you can fit a 20inch wheel and tyre combo on your EF but a 16inch EL XR rim will look really good without costing a fortune or stuffing up insurance or road worthiness

Here is how to interpret tyre sizes, I'll use the XR ones as an example. 225/50 R16. The 225 is how wide the tyre is in mm, 50 is the height of the side wall in mm and the R16 is the inside diameter, well size wheel the tyre will fit in this case 16 inch. So when you look at the wheel tyre combo you have on now (205/65 R15) compared to the XR's 225/50 R16, yes it's a bigger rim but the tyres are not as high. So if you were to put them side by side there would be very little difference in overall height.
Hope this gives you a bit more of an understanding. :)

not quite!!!
say 225/50/16
225 is the width in mm , the 50 is 50% of the tyre width( not 50mm side wall)
and the 16 is the rim diameter in inches...

What do you mean 50% tyre width.
Does that mean in a 225 scenario the side wall is 112.5mm tall?

afaik the height of the tyre is based on the width.
the 50 is the aspect ratio so its the percentage of the width.
so a 245/50/16 will be taller than a 225/50/16 even though they are both 50's

225/50R16 (632mm diameter) were factory options on EFs, so they will definitely fit, and should be legal everywhere. I think 205/65R15 (647mm) were standard on the XR6. I have had 225/60R15 (651mm) and 225/55R16 (654mm) on my EF XR6, and now have 235/45R17 (644mm). The XR6 is lower than the Futura, and I had no issues of rubbing with any of these sizes. So, I figure that anything from 632mm to 654mm should work just fine on your car, and maybe a bit outside of that. See http://www.blairs.co.nz/tyres/interchangeability4.html for interchangeability info.

If your car is significantly lowered, you might have issues.

You can't use AU-onward wheels on your E-series, as the offset will make them hit your brake calipers and probably suspension parts too. I have heard horror stories about spacers/adaptors, and would be very wary of them. Another Fordmods member posted pics of his car after a front spacer failed, and the tyre went under the car at 50kmh - not pretty.

Cheers
