My AU did a similar thing and the problem was the inhibitor switch which tells the ECU where the shifter is, was rooted.

If it's in Limp home mode, it would not even churn through 1st or 2nd gear, would just be in 3rd the whole time.

IIRC EBI had a TCM, it was EBII-AU that had the ECU control the box. With the exception of V8's of course.

So perhaps that may be the reason it's in limp mode? I would just ask the guy who did it what he's done, and he'll fix it too if it's an error on his part.
