Hey guys

I went from Adelaide to Pt Pire yesturday, about 200km i used 39ltrs to get there and about the same geting back.

so nearly 20l/100km. pathetic for a long highway trip at 110km/h on flat road.

i checked a few things when i got back.

The end of the exhaust was full of sut( not sure how u spell it )

The spark plugs are really black on the end even tho they are only about 2000km old and there was alot of sut inside the engine bay. The car runs and feels normal but the only thing is that it sometimes even at 110km/h it feel like its cutting out or choking.

Any sudgetions

Anything done to the engine? Mine is stock and will only use 9 to 10 litres per 100Ks.
Hows it sound at idle?

im thinking its one of the VAC lines as the brake booster has a crack in it as you can hear it whistling getting a new booster on tues have to see how it goes

There's no way your EF should be using that much fuel at cruise. And the black plugs after a decent trip would indicate serious over-fuelling.

Could be vacuum leak. Check by spraying engine start spray over the intake manifold and vacuum hoses coming off it. When you spray it on a leak, the spray gets sucked in and the revs increase. Keep it away from the exhaust side: flammable spray + hot exhaust manifold = BOOM.

Could be O2 sensor. Pulling diagnostic codes should tell you if the sensor has died.

Could be MAP sensor (little black box on firewall behind intake manifold). If MAP sensor has failed, you should see black smoke from the exhaust at idle (pull the hose off it with the engine running and you will see what I mean). I don't know if they can partially fail and burn just half rich.

Just a remote possibility: check your coolant temp sensor and air temp sensor (use multimeter with warm engine). If either of these has failed, it may be telling the ECU that the engine hasn't warmed up yet and it will up the fuel to compensate.

My two bits.

Sounds like you're running really rich. Agreed with the O2 sensor, if it has never been replaced, good time to replace it. They don't last forever and cause major fuel consumption.

You say there is a vacuum leak...definitely a problem. Fix it...gaffa tape/race tape etc or just get a new brake booster and see how the car runs. Vacuum leak will cause lack of power, which means the car needs to run harder to do the same amount of work. So while you're cruising and leaking vacuum, the engine will work harder and requires more fuel.

yeah i agree, replace the O2 senser and get a spray of air flow meter cleaner as well.

Also check that cat converter hasn`t broken up in the exhaust clogging your exhaust system, it will cause excessive consumption.
