so the last week my ef has been running rough, i thought it was just some bad fuel as it was pinging, was waiting till i had a day off to investigate further.

last night coming home from work it backfired and then conked out.

engine cranks over fine but wont run. I checked spark and it seems fine (blue flame) plugs and leads only have 3000kms on them so don't think it's that.

i'm guessing fuel - i can hear the fuel pump when i put it into ign but the chamber seems pretty dry - not sure what or how i can test it. can't find my gregory's manual so any advice would be appreciated.

cheers

Pull the return hose off the pump and put it into a Coke bottle and get someone to turn the ignition to reds and try and start it. Should see fuel pump into the bottle if it is OK.

Check to see if your injectors are pulseing. While someone cranks it over you should here them tick, might need to get your head close to them :D or use a screw driver as a stethescope. Failing that, try another ECU.

baaahhh so frustrating.. injectors aren't ticking.. tried another ECU and still no luck, also replaced coil and distributor + cap (had them spare). Also replaced all fusable links...

someone suggested it might smartlock, not sure though due to the way it just conked out while driving.

battery is dead so going to put it on charge and try troubleshoot smartlock tomorrow :(

One thing you can also check, is if the interior light works or not, if its not working, youll find the fuse has gone, and iirc that particular fuse also works the smartlock, i had a similar issue in my XH ute awhile back, you could crank it, the fuel pump would prime everything else seemed to work but it just wouldnt kick over and it turned out to be a 20c fuse haha.

Id give it a look over anyway just to be sure :)

Yeah could be fuse for the smartlock,
i've seen a few of these do this.
Another way is to see if the smartlock light is going on the cluster when you turn the key.

Fazza is right with the smartlock and interior light if it is blown or missing it will turn over but wilnot start, also another trick if its got something with smartlock also turn ign key to on and wait 30 minutes then try without turning to the of position

been a while... car still isn't running. haven't had much time to

have checked the following -
1. Interior light is working
2. Tested injector relay - pulsing with test lamp when cranking
3. Attempted ECU / smartlock training
4. Kicked it and swore lots.

Oh - my engine does have a dizzy - original engine was replaced with a XH XR6 engine, the car is a real bitsa :)

One thing i noticed is my door locks used to pulse when I connected the battery, they don't do that anymore which makes me still suspicious of the smart lock, or a wiring problem.

Though given the way it just died while driving I think a bigger problem exists, I am thinking the dizzy cam, or timing chain skipped a tooth..

thanks for all the suggestions, though i'm ready to just scrap the car and start again.

Check your TFI module and your coil. I know you said you have spark but may not be strong enough.
