I have used the complete ACL Race kit, I rate them. On another note, if you did not use the ACL kit, what would you use? ACL make a VERY good kit though.

I used the standard ACL kit and bought a AU MLS Head Gasket.

ACL are fine, but make sure you get your block checked/decked/measured etc. before you buy the kit...better yet, order it from the engine rebuilder because they will know what size pistons/rings/etc that are needed to fit the block (if it had to be bored out more than standard).

If you are doing it yourself, make sure you know what sizes you need to get.

There is always unforseen costs when undertaking such work.
Some examples for me were my timing cover didn't fit due to the block being decked, so it had to be machined,
I also broke the plastic vacuum manifold near the throttle body, lost the replacement and had to buy it again ,
my engine machinist gave me standard rings and it needed .020 oversize and wouldn't exchange them because I already threw out the box

It also slipped my mind that I needed all the fluids and normal service parts until I had it in the bay.

Not sure if a timing chain kit comes with it, but I'd suggest getting that replaced while you're at it. Add to that, oil pump and maybe water pump if you have the money.

Ive found if you get a quote for parts from VPW then go to Repco.. Repco will better the price.

You can make do with a Gregory's manual to remove and put things together, but best to have had some experience in mucking around with them before hand (even if you have a spare engine to play with), but I suggest having the actual workshop manual that has better details of everything. If you have no experience at all, I suggest you get someone with experience to help you out or get a pro to do it.

Hate to see you spend $2000 odd to rebuild your own motor for it to be totally fucked and spending thousands more to get it done properly. Nothing wrong with experimenting, but just be aware that not everything will go to plan.

^ Definitely get someone who knows what they are doing to give you a hand - feels a lot better knowing you are doing it right rather than not being sure. Even with a genuine manual I would have second guessed a lot when I did the rebuild on my old car.

Not that hard to do. Would be hard if you dont have patience, money and the right tools.

I suggest you get quotes on the machining and parts before undertaking. A true total without cutting corners (like re-using an oil pump) will most likely change your mind.

I would question any shop who would charge less than $3500 for parts and labour on even a standard rebuild.

You can buy a HM exchange engine for less then that, with a pretty good nation wide warranty.

That said I'm doing an AU engine that including R&R is going to be a tad over $4000.

The oil pump I find generally isn't something that needs to be replaced on these engines, strip, inspect, measure. Put the pressure relief spring in a valve spring tester to find out if it is still in spec and shim it as needed.

Some high mileage engines or engines run on s**t oil will show wear in the pump.
