hey just wanna hear wat u guys reckon. im looking at an ef or el xr. a good EF is around 3-4k cheaper than the equivelent EL. Ive been hearing that the EF's have more problems than the EL, and any hoo wondering if it was worth spending the extra $$$ to get an EL or fix/mod an EF

Same power in both cars. ELs front bar looks better.

Wont have as many door actuator problems in the EL. EFs are rife with door actuator problems. I have two EFs and the XR has cycling door locks.

If it were me in your shoes I'd go the EL. But I would also look for the XR8 not the 6. Its all up to you though. Happy hunting.

hmm each to there own on the front bar i like the ef one, theres not a whole lot of difference a few thinks tidied up, the EL has a nicer bodykit if u are looking for one with a kit. amber indicators on the tail lights. the interior on the ef is nicer but alot of people may not like the purple colour i rekon it look sportier tho, probably not worth the extra few grand to get an EL if the k's are similar.

i guess also alot of EL's may be under warranty still things like that

he guys thanx for the feedback. been looking round and found an EF with EL XR bodykit. so that one is looking very nice indeed specially for the price. the only thing worrying me is the door actuator problem...if it occurs how is it fixed? also with regards to mods, the EF has coil packs where as EL has normal dizzy. which would respond better to mods. any major problems with coilpacks?

the problem in the door actuators was fixed in the ef series to so if it was built after october 95 it will be fixed, but they still have problems just not as bad. The ef series 1 was recalled for the faulty door locks so there is a chance also that they were fixed, its not a major problem if they go abit dodgey, i fixed mine my self with to new actuaors for under $100 and its all sweet now.

The transmission of the EF and early ELs respond differently. The EF and early EL won't go into top gear in econ mode at 60 K's. In power mode it will. You can spot the first EL's as they have interior door locks on the Passenger door as well as Drivers door.

I think the all black steering wheel looks better on the EL, but that's just me.

Check a review of the EL on something like http://carsguide.news.com.au to find out what the mechanical changes were.

Well ive always wanted an EL XR however i still find nothing wrong with the EF XR's, Ive fallen for the EF XR front i think it looks sweet and i am no longer thinking of doing the swap over ne more. :P

However saying get a 8cyl insted of the 6...Well the EF XR6's are faster than the EF Xr8's so unless you plan on getting the 187kw donk EL XR8 then i would just go a six. :P

But yeah just my opinion.

I have an early EL XR6 and the original owner was able to get the door locking problem fixed under warranty when the car was only a year old. Since then there has been no problems with them. But definately a topic to bring up with the seller.

Multicoil is heaps better than dizzy, especialy if your going to use an aftermarket ecu later on... multi coil allows you to have far greater control over ignition tuning... great for turbo's :D

Two years ago I set out to buy a EL XR8 or maybe a EF if it was cheap, I ended up buying a AU XR8 because I found one cheap enough.

But I still think the EL with the Body kit is the Best looking out of all of them.

I also like the V8 EL Fairmont Ghia, but there a bit harder find.

I know a Bloke who kept telling me his AU1 XR6 was faster then my AU1 XR8. because he read it in a Magazine.

five straight wins by me, against him out at Calder soon changed his mind.

My best was 14.7 seconds his was 15.6 seconds, and as a Bonus mine sounds better. :D Also both Cars have about the same fuel economy

He could stay with me for about the first 200 metres, then I would start pulling away.
