Hey fellas, just finished my EL BBM, and EL ECU conversion, and let me tell you, F**k, it's soooo much more responsive and really feel the extra go down low from seat of the pants, and the top end is pretty good too, plus way better in a driving sense too.
But one thing, I already have thermos in my ED, and they are wired using three relays, one for each fan and one for A/C for one only. I removed Davies Craig switch and want the EL ECU to run my thermos, but can't bloody well get it do do so. Geez, it's really annoying me, I mustn't be doing something right, but what?? Anybody done this conversion and is using EL ECU to run thermo fans, PLEASE help us out, coz it needs to work. I thank you all in advance. Cheers, Mark. |

I have read the Tech doco too, but can't make light of the fact the EL ECU is 12V relay off, and 0V relay on. I get you need 5 pin relay, which I have, but it has no change of voltage from pins 33 or 53, regardless to car temperature!!! Why??? 1 wire coming out of pin 33 or 53 to relay to act as switch is obviously probably how it should work, but nothing. Makes no sense to me.

hey mate never done this before but i choud get you the loom that will make them work from the ecu

OK, but since the looms are the same from ECU on both cars, and having pulled out a whole bunch of pins from the old loom, it should be able to be connected to the ECU, because really, that part of the ECU is just a trigger to energise the relay to either state which operate the thermo fans.
But unless the Doco could be wrong with a number wrong on the pin descriptions, but I doubt that. |

the looms are similar but not the exact same just go down to the wreckers pickup the el wireing loom think its like $16

Ok, well if somebody has a wiring diagram of how they work and hook up to ECU, would greatly appreciate it, because if the looms are nearly the same apart from the few wires for fans, then I think I would prefer to add them in myself, as to take out the whole loom would be a lengthy process, as I had to extend wires, run them in different spots, cable tie them to secure them in different spots, so yeah, not just a matter of swapping loom.

Hey fellas, got it sorted, and working great. $20 in automotive cable and some relays I had lying around, it works. If anybody is interested, I received a scan of an EL workshop manual of the fan schematics, and it took and hour of crimping joins connectors etc, but much better to know ECU is running fans.

P.S, if anybody uses this, instead of like me trying to figure out what AUTO TX is, you can actually use ANY 12V IGNITION source, whatever is closest or most convenient, but must be ignition, not battery, as relays will draw power and eventually drain battery.

Hey TROYMAN, well going by diagram there are three, so i thought I should use all three. I think the three are for two speeds, because when car is moving, the fans are off unless the car is up to temp, and on a low speed (hardly audible but definately on) when stopped. I've had them come on high speed once after being stationary from freeway speed but only for about 10 seconds or so. I think maybe it's so there is a constant slow flow of air and only on when needed, therefore less strain on alternator (although with your 110 amp AU one as opposed to my bodgy 80 amp ED one you wouldn't worry about it)

ok..
do the fans come on when you turn the air con on?? and unfortunately im still using the 70 amp ea alternator with the davis craig thermo switch and when they come on the 2 fans are on full speed and they do draw a fair bit of power. so hopefully once i hook the fans up to the ecu there wont be as much load on my alternator. also on the diagram there is a tx wire which is ignition and would i be right to assume that the other wire with fusable link is direct to battery? i had a wiring diagram but the way is was layed out gave me a head f**k lol.. the one you have there is much better than the one i had so now i can make sense of it... |

yes tx is the 12 volt ignition and fusible link is direct to battery. the join from fusible link that goes to the 4 and 5 pin relay i put individually with a 30amp fuse on both. Yes they do come on when air con is on again only at low speed unless required. eg. if it was a hot day or something.

on ef el the thermo fan relay are earth switched
they have constant 12v at the relay but the ecu uses the earth side to switch them on probaly already know that but just thought id check i know on v8 looms the blue wires out of the ecu pin numbers 17 and 68 ithink are the relay wires

Yeah, knew that, thanks anyway, some might not have known that who would be contemplating this. Also, on the 6's it's pins 33 and 53.
