That is very strange. It sounds like the ecu or it might be the ecu-ignition relay.
It might be getting a feedback supply through the scanner & that's why it runs with the scanner connected.
Anyway if you lived in Sydney i'll tell you to come & see me as i am an auto electrician & efi speicalist.
Good luke with it & keep us posted. I'd like to know what the fault is.

ok now thins car is really s**t me off...after all the money i just spent on it and got it running, now there is strange noises coming from the back of the motor....i think it might be time to get a new one...any idea of how much it would cost for another motor (preferably a tickford xr6 motor) with all the running gear aswell

Quick and easy one to check first. See if your torque convertor bolts are tight. Can make alot of weird noises if loose at all

just fixed brother inlaws ed 6, bad mechanical noises at back of motor. was the starter motor, the bendix was playing up not letting the gear return after throwing out, starter gear was touching the the flywheel ring gear whilst it was running, real metallic noises. sounded serious, but only cost $25 for a good used starter motor

well found out the noise is coming from the front of the gearbox, so its going in to have a manual box put into it....MANUAL FAIRMONT, hell yes...costing me $1500 for it to be completely installed so i cant complain about that and now im as happy as a pig in mud
