hey all,
at work..
there was a little accident a while back with a hybrid engine.. some c*ck took the chain tensioner out, and I was unaware the other day, and started rotating the engine by hand, had the head on still with the cam etc,

after a few rotations I couldnt get tdc on the balancer to line up with the cam sprocket mark and the head.. so i first thought the chain has jumped teeth..

so I pulled the head off as I have to anyway, noticed that the balancer has slipped,(which would be why I couldnt line the balancer up with the cam) the Harmonic balancer is almost 180* out from the timing mark on the timing cover with no1 at the Top.

with no1 at tdc the cam sprocket looks to be where it should (hard to tell because the head is now off and sent away)
But the Yellow Chain Links dont line up with the 2nd mark in the cam sprocket, Does this matter? as long as the crank, cam and dizzy is at TDC, and No1, it shouldnt? am I right?

my other question is.. now the heads off.. if the chain has jumped enough teeth to put the cam 180* out, how can I find TDC Compression stroke? do I just guess? its a 50/50 chance I guess.. or does it not matter as long as no1 piston is at the top? and the cam mark is 3mm above the head?

By the sounds of it I had the same thing happen to me when I had a workshop put a wade cam in my car. It was 180 degrees out and pistons mashed valves and was all kinds of fun.

This link may help you http://autofix.com.au/blog/el-falcon-hy ... aft-timing

thanks for that!

I dont know 100% if it is 180 degrees out.. coz like I said.. the marks line up, at the moment at whatever TDC im at,

but I dont know how to find out if im on TDC Compression Stroke or the other coz the heads not on it.... is there a way i can find out? or do i just have to guess it?

If the spark plug sparks it's tdc compression stroke. But it will be just before obviously.

Don't suppose you have a cam there? You could check with that to see where the lobes are at...

im sorry.. don't mean to be rude by any means,

but did you read the original post? haha

I basically need to know,

if piston 1 is at the Top, in the block,
and I put the cam in, so the sprocket mark is 3mm above the head (like an EF Engine)
set the dizzy at number 1,

it will start?

it does not matter where the Yellow Links in the chain are?

I just figured out I'm retarted! I was trying to say when the harmonic balancer is lined up with tdc see if the cam with sprocket (which got sent out with the head?) looked like it was on compression... Eye ball it. But I suppose without the head it might be out anyway.

Sorry but I think my brain isn't working!

And I just figured there was more to your reply.

Just disregard my posts.
Sorry for waisting your time

do these engines push number 1 cyl to the top once every 2nd rotation of the balancer? or does cyl 1 come to the top every rotation??

I cant remember and don't want to rotate the crank at the moment because the cyl's have some crap in them from cleaning the old Headgasket off..

yes....
compression stroke is determined by the cam position.
piston tdc, cam mark as per ef, dizzy at no 1 = win!
