hiy'all... got noisy starter motor; just had clutch replaced and starter started screaming. 2 days later, car won't start. today replaced starter with new (bosch), but screeching still there...just on start up, not continuously. could it be a fly wheel problem?? any way to fix without getting under and ripping out the starter again??? (please god don't make me go back in there!!!)
cheers for any advice.

it sounds like there could be dammaged teeth on the flywheel??..

this is bad!!!
if there are dammaged teeth on the flywheel this means gearbox will need to come out...

update.
just got back from clutch guy; had to take out gearbox and flywheel; flywheel ringgear had a couple sets of teeth a bit chewed up from the stater gear seeming to over-engage... no-one is sure how that is possible, clutch guy never seen it before... esp. not just in 1 or 2 plces on the ring!
so i'm thinking they either missed it when they machined the flywheel; or didn't machine the flywheel at all....
but there was no noise before the clutch was replaced...??? any clues as to how the teeth got damaged anyone??

nah.. you could see where it was "worn" as opposed to chipped or crushed... there was a concave grind into the teeth....
a head scratcher. par for the course; it's my car!

Engines usually stop on a compression stroke which means the ring gear gets worn out the most where the starter is located.Early mechanics would rotate the ring gear so that the starter would hopefully chew out another section. Some ring gears have offset bolt holes to make people buy another.A Ford 6 cylinder wears out in 3 places.Kevman.
