Starting from the beginning. Mate has had a problem with his EL XR6 (essentially stock).Had a minor miss and had been a while since it had had a plug change etc. Did the lot-plugs, leads, cap and rotor button. Ran better- for a short time. Then the tacho started jumping at idle, engine got real thirsty. Had a bit of a head scratch and thought that maybe the plug on the back of the coil was a bit crook and perhaps the o2 sensor had cried uncle. Actually shifted the coil from the side of the block to a more appropriate place and replaced the plug. Replaced the o2 sensor with one from another vehicle we knew was fine-no difference. More head scratching. One of the plugs, leads or even the cap or button must be crook (doesn't explain the staggering tacho). Pulled everything off my XH (with broadband and it was running fine) and put it on the car. If anything it got worse. Tried injectors. No better. Even tried stupid stuff like the idle up sensor for the steering, ISCV and TPS. Replaced the relays for the ECU and Fuel pump. In desperation we even took the ECU out of the XH and chucked it in the XR. No change. Messed with the timing. No change. Compression check-between 175 and 200 on each cylinder. We can't pin down which cylinder has the issue either. The injectors that come out of the car were carboned up and two of the caps were cracked (could have happened on removal as they were difficult to get out) but the XH ones were clean and working fine. Each injector is firing so wiring here is not an issue.
We are out of ideas. Final thoughts tonight were: Fuel filter (hasn't been changed in a while); has the tacho s**t itself and is causing the problem? The staggering tacho has got me stumped.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Fuel filter could be part of the problem, fuel regulator also.

Staggering tacho...bad earth or wiring some where behind the dash?

Also if you replace ECU, the ECU will usually have to relearn. My ECU was reset today and it doesn't idle properly...turn the wheel when stopped and the car just stalls or stop at the lights and the idle would jump around and stall/nearly stall. However this shouldn't be a cause for the miss.

Thirsty engine could be O2 sensor or vacuum leak. Check the MAP sensor or any loose vacuum hoses.

Have ruled out fuel system as this cant affect the tacho. Tried the TFI unit. In desperation we checked the resistor in the tacho wire. It was fine. Even tried a different radio suppressor on it. Checked as many earths as we can find. Now we are absolutely stumped

mine was doing the same thing ended up being a vacuum leak from the brake booster. got a second hand one for $30 20mins to change it over and no issue's since, but the car did run worse for about a day, i figured the ecu had to get used to it or somthing coz now it is fine

Also thought of any vaccuum leak. Didn't locate any.

Found the problem-the hard way  . Had the thing running (rough) mate gives it a rev and it backfires sounds absolutely s**t and we couldn't get it to run again. It would fire every now and then but not run. So we changed the dizzy. When we removed his old dizzy (which was fitted new at Christmas time) the gear at the bottom was damaged (minor but enough to notice). So we fitted the other dizzy with the original gear thinking the damage had come from the two original gears being a worn matched pair. No matter what we did we couldn't get this thing to run at all. It would fire occasionally but not run. Whipped the dizzy cap off and the timing was out. Dizzy out and reset. No better. Cap off-timing is out again. We started to think we were going nuts cos we were sure we had the timing right both times. Tried again. Same result-timing was out. In desperation, all the plugs were removed and the cap left off. Watch the rotor button and hey presto!!! it staggered!!! Haven't pulled it down yet but we believe that fitting the dizzy at Christmas with a new gear (rather than the one that had been worn in) has damaged the gear on the auxillary shaft, knocking at least one tooth off. The final straw was the rev he gave it which snapped more teeth to the point where we couldn't keep the timing right.

The interesting thing is I haven't heard of this happening before. I've seen the oil pump seize and smash the dizzy gear and I've seen an aftermarket gear on the dizzy get cut up by the Auxillary shaft gear but I've never seen the Auxillary shaft gear fail before.

Has anyone else?

I was chasing a miss in my car & decided to swap out the dizzy. took it back to the mech after 3 weeks & said it was running even worse. I think the initial problem was the intake gasket but now Im fairly sure the aux shaft is screwed. Just waiting for the head to go for a semi major tear down.....
