Yesterday I took the head off the car. Yes I did it a month ago. Anyway last time I took it off and i noticed build up on the pistons they were all black. I think it is carbon build up. I thought the car was running rich because I was constantly putting premium in the tank.

After the head was put on last time I cleaned the top of the pistons, and they came up shiny again. Since then I have not put premium in the car. You could see my surprise when I took the head off yesterday and there was the build up on top of the pistons again.

Do the XR6 EL falcons run richer than the standard falcons and should this be happening. Or do I need a tune up. Or what other fix can I do.

Any help would be appreciated.

I can still get around 400kms per tank around town and even more with premium.

But is the build up on the top of the pistons normal??

Could be a few things.... poor combustion of air/fuel usually leads to this... bad leads/coil/dizzy.... incorrect gap/heat rating of plugs.. or, indeed... too much fuel. Ive even read that bad blow-by can cause this..

Oil consumption ok?

I will check the gaps in the plugs before I put them back in. BTW does any body know the gaps for XR6 plugs. When I bought the plugs i asked for XR6 plugs so I hope they are correct. Changed them oct 03. Leads are brand new....maybe dizzy cap may need changing.

If to much fuel do I get fix it by getting a tune up??

Unsure of oil consumption as that's why I changed gasket originally. Will have to wait until its all back together

a little off topic but i walked into my mechanics workshop and sitting their idling (more along the lines of shaking/rumbling away) was a street drivin 10 second XW fairmont sedan, fine when i walked in, went out for a ciggy with my mechanic, he goes, walk back in now. The moment i stepped into the workshop my eyes started to sting and i could barely breath! now thats running RICH!

try air temp sensor in intake just under the throttle body some times cleaning it helps . build up on sensor causes incorrect readings and causes it to run rich

Water injection prevents this as does a leaky head gasket. One clean cylinder is a sure way to tell if your head gasket or head is cracked in that cylinder. Gas engines tend to run a hell of a lot cleaner and they also may not be as carboned up. Just a little food for thought

Someone spoke to a mechanic about my car yesterday and he said it sounds like oil is coming through the rings. To clean this stuff off you need to scrub with degreaser and a brass wire brush.

Will have to wait and see how much oil it is using when car is back on the road.

You need to do a decent Italian Tune-up regularly to keep the old beast's guts clean
