Nothin too good for my baby

I was pretty nervous about the swap to synthetic, but have been blown away by this stuff. Thick as pig s**t when cold, nice and thin when warm. Engine so much quiter now. Beeeaaauuuuutiful. First oil change since the switch is coming up - spose that'll be the real verdict.

Ahhh - the 'oil thread'

Bottom line:

Doesn't matter much what you use - as long as you change it regularly.

Synth/semi-synth is, in a domestic motor like the standard ford I-6, pretty much a waste of money. Kinda like using a Kenworth to move a fridge.

Have a look at the following link and it'll give you an idea about what goes into motor oil, and compares the 'recipes' for different brands (all of them yank BTW):

http://www.vtr.org/maintain/oil-overview.html

All oils in the Aussie market meet the minimum quality standards - I think you'll find the major difference is how long they maintain their viscosity.

ie. Homebrand engine oil might be OK for ~500kms, while Mobil1 is OK for ~10000kms (random figures I invented myself - not necessarily accurate).

An interesting study can be found at this link:

http://www.soliton.net/content/rec/nigh ... e_Oils.htm

Also, steer clear of additives (such as slick-50):

http://www.vtr.org/maintain/oil-additives.html

Now your homework is to write an essay on the comparative advantages/disadvantages of running full synth for 20000kms v dino for 5000kms in a ford I-6 ;-)

Hmmm hes a very clever man, or he reads alot same thing really. Ummm interesting about the additives caltex reccomends adding some s**t to the oil. Whether this is to sell more products or not i dunno i just found it interesting though! Although one thing i do not like bp oils, neighbour i work for uses them and i can't stand them there engine oils look like absolute s**t, and to put it in a tractor worth 150k plus i would think twice about!

Just a quick question in regards to changing to Synth from standard oil. Will the remaining standard oil degrade the Synth, meaning you don't get the full protection of the Synth??? I know it's near impossible to get every drop of old oil out will out a complete disassemble and rebuild and was curious to know what others experiences have been. I was thinking it would probably take two or three changes for the full benefits of the synth to be achieved..

Yeah i think you may be correct. When i first did the swap, it didnt take long to get dirty. On the second lot of Mobil 1 now, few weeks in and still looks like as clean as canola oil! I changed the first lot of synth after 5000km and it basically looked like the dino juice that was in there before.

Thinking i may change again next 5000km but will see how it looks.

When changing from mineral to synthetic, its a good idea to use engine flush. Thats what I did, and my oil stayed crystal clear.

Is Penrite really shuch a good oil or are all you aussies just biased? :?
Its a serious question btw!

I put Shell Ultra (the 15W40 synthetic stuff) in my 98 EL XR6 and it seems to be good stuff...if you can really tell the difference between the top brands then you are better than me. :!:

i've been running it for 2 years, i change oil every 5,000km, and im happy with it, personally i don't think it's anything special either, but the motor is still goin strong, with 2 years of lead-footed-driving!
