i am not the most ford knowledgeable person, and i was just wondering how much different an xr6's engine is to the base model

depends on which model. from the ba onwards, its the same engine in the xr6 and xt.

Different ECU, different camshaft, 2mm bigger exhaust valves, different fuel pressure regulator, slightly different porting in the cylinder head, that's about it, the XR6's also got a 2.5" exhaust from factory.
