I remember being tought to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth, it makes sense when you think about it.

I did a few quick google searches. The only reason I found for breathing through your nose during exercise is to stop your throat from drying out. I found more sites telling you to breath through both than one or the other (maybe I didnt search long enough).

Quote:
If you can breathe through your nose when you exercise, you're not exercising hard enough.

You can't get enough air through your nose to meet your needs for oxygen when you exercise vigorously. The cross sectional area of the openings in your nose is less than one tenth the opening in the back of your mouth. So when you pick up the pace, you could turn blue.

Quote:
...The same with whether you breathe through your nose or your mouth. Most runners naturally breathe through both. Famed New Zealand coach Arthur Lydiard, when asked how runners should breathe, once replied: "Breathe through your mouth. Breathe through your nose. Suck the air in through your ears, if you can."

Your jaw should be relaxed, your mouth slightly open. The oxygen will come through your nose and mouth to your lungs, to your blood and to your muscles without you needing to give it a lot of thought.

but I think we(I) are carrying the analogy a little too far now

I was told you breathe in through the nose to stop from hyper-ventilating.

if the analogy had used swimming not running, the google search would have shown, in through the mouth, out through the nose........

how about cutting 1cm off the and of a drinking straw and breathing through that, sure the air speed is way up, but you can't get much air in.

it went to hell in the first post....

but.. ppl are getting confused with air blown thru a pipe.. and air sucked thru a pipe..

the breathing in thing would be by far the best way to describe it..

i guess proper calculations are required to work out which intake is best, why not rig up some airflow meter, or / and volume meter to check designs
