Hello again,
I've been over some rough road last month and drive many kilometres a day. Lately I have been starting to hear a noise coming from under my car each time I start to accelorate .e.g from 60 to 100 kph ...noise appears to be constant and becoming worse. I jacked the car up and found what looks like a crack in an exhaust muffler or is it the catalytic convertor...hmmm, not sure, all I can tell you its underneath the drivers side and towards the front. Can someone confirm if this is a crack and is it the catalytic convertor or normal exhaust muffler? Cheers

from what bi can see that is the cat
its the first muffler looking thing attached to the exhaust after the headers with a heat shield wrapped around it they are pretty cheap to get from the wreacker around 50-100 depending on the wrecker

mate is that just after the exhaust manifold because to me it looks like the catalytic converter

it is pretty easy to take the shield off
youll need a pare of pliers and tin snips at each end there should be a clamp you can cut off then you only need to un fold the edges to remove the shield putting it back on is the reverse but youll need to use some new clamps i use some large hose clamps that i had laying around but you dont really need to but it back on

I have noticed when the engine is cold, I hardly get a noise but gradually gets worse as it warms up. I've been off road a few times with her, if those knuckle heads who drive 4WD's properly instead of screwing up the dirt roads leaving ruts behind, chances are it would still ok. I'll have to have a good look. and use higher stands. |

G'day to those who replied to my question.
I'll have to check it out again and will have to replace it soon, damn noise gets worse than before. When the engine is cold and running, hardly any noise, when she's warmed up wow, noise is very audible. When stopped and start to accelerate to speed, yeah, very noticable, seems like a rattling / vibrating noise like metal then gradually becomes louder. |

Hi mate i had the same problem twice, its not the heat shield on the cat, it doesnt carry anything so it wont leak, its one of the gaskets in a flange near by, if youve given the cat a wack it would have stuffed a gasket, thatl only cost ya $30 at an exhaust shop.

no worries mate, i thought the same thing as i had a big tear in my cat heat shield, but from the hit it had stuffed a gasket on the cats flange where it joins the extractors, if the cat itself has collapsed internally it will be a noise that you couldnt stand, not on off or dealable, but get it checked anyway....???

Hi guys,
Thanks to all those who responded, I went to some exhuast joint on my way back from uni as it was driving me nuts....bloke checked the cat...cat still good (so far)...noise was coming from middle mufler...the insides of the muffler was stuffed and needed immediate replacement...so it was replaced...noise gone, but yes I will be replacing the cat a.s.a.p. Cat has been on there for 10 years I think so it could be on its use by date soon. Once again, thanks everyone for your assistance. Cheers, Peter |

My NC still has the original cat, modified to suit the 3" outlet on my Pacemakers. It even has the guts still in it and it's 17 years old.

Nah, not writing the old cat off...just keeping options open.
I tend to go off the bitumen track a fair deal, good fishing spots. |
