The BTR automatic's worst enemy is HEAT!!!! Trans coolers often fitted for towing as more weight = more slippage in the converter = more heat and need to dissipate this.

But this is also an advantage for non-towing vehicles. The cooler the box runs, the longer the fluid lasts, the longer before the transmission begins to suffer from s**t fluid = better lifespan for the box.

If my ghia has a factory tow bar does this mean it has a cooler from standard?

more than likely. You can see the cooler if you bend down an look in the large vent under your front numberplate. If you have one it looks like a small radiator

Just have a look in your engine bay. If there's lines coming from the trasmission to the radiator side tank and/or to a seperate cooler then a trans cooler is fitted.

You can but havent heard of them fitted on T5. My housemate used to have an RX2/Capella and that damn thing had a cooler for everything.. including engine oil.

It doesn't need it, and there are no connections for the lines or a pump.

That's a little personal isnt it? Oh right.... bigger trans coolers...

Similar to radiator and interooler theory.. generally, the bigger the better cooling ability. I guess just a matter of deciding how much heat you need to get out of the trans. If you tow a caravan around then the torque converter is gonna be working pretty hard and generating some serious heat.... if just a sporty sedan then a small external cooler would be fine. Heck, im running standard side-tank cooler on my trans (for now...) and no dramas yet.

You can use them, but they arent generally on manuals. Theres less stress oon the fluid as its only there to lubricate in a manual, unlike the autos. Still, it cant really hurt
