My Auto 1998 EL Falcon Futura is almost stalling, or would stall if I didn't hit the gas to save it every time, when I brake firmly coming to a stop or intersection, or off a HWY. Any ideas what it could be? I've checked all the basic levels, such as water, and everything is fine.

Only when you brake? How's the car running? Split booster vac hose?

Only when i'm braking. It's almost like the transmission is pulling down the engine revs if I was to explain it in words. Very strange. All the hoses that I can see seem to be fine. I'll double check them though tomorrow.

Does your car idle ok? You may need your idler adjusted even if it seems ok it still might be below what its supposed to be while stopped and if this is the case when you try and brake it wants to stall. I cant explain the reason why it wants to stall but my car did it for a bit exactly like that and I got the idler adjusted and it fixed the problem.

one of the clutches in my auto releases very late when stopping and the car has this same symptom..the idle goes very low but it never actually stalls..probably a sticky gearbox solenoid..if you listen hard enough you can probably even hear the solenoid 'click' at the moment just before the engine idle speed does finally increase. i stopped worrying about it...although sometimes the power steering gets heavy..no big deal

I know when I disconnect my Idle Speed Controller, and my car is cold, it'll stall if I don't lay some revs into the motor.

Not sure if this is your case, but hope it helps anyhow.

Yes the car is running fine otherwise and idles perfect when just sitting, it's only a problem when braking! I have noticed that it seems to be worse when the coolant level is down a little.

This sounds like it could be the issue? I'll have a bit of a research with this and see if I can find a problem. Perhaps putting it in neutral and then braking and seeing if it stalls or not will diagnose a problem with the transmission solenoid? Or any other problems south of the transmission really I guess.

Thanks for that too, I'll have a look into that as well.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions so far! :D

I pulled the radiator off yesterday and put a new one on, flushed out the engine and cleaned out all the hoses until I buy new ones. The old Radiator was stuffed, all corroded at the bottom and full of crap.

When I put the new radiator back on the car's cooling system was evidently working the way it should! With the thermostat opening and closing as it warmed up making the temperature gauge move slightly, showing me the new radiator was working just sitting still. The old one never did that.

I took it for a drive and it's running much cooler, not that it was saying it was hot before though. It seems to be running better, this may have fixed the water problem as I suspect it was under too much pressure before and spitting the water out.

The airconditioning condenser after I cleaned it. Looks new!

The old radiator!

I experianced VERY similar issues with a Magna a few months back and it was the voltage regulator on the side of the alternator that had s**t itself. Was a $15 fix after a rather expensive diagnostic period :?

My car does a very similar thing but also experiences flat spots at about 2000rpm. Despite this the car runs fine and doesnt seem to have a loss in power? The alternator light used to flash on and off every now and then but hasnt done it for a couple of months

Lol that was the only symptom that was missing from the original post. My alternator light used to flicker also. This went on for months before it started to stall when I pressed the brakes. Campbell18 I will bet your problem is the voltage regulator on the alternator.

I had a very similar problem mate was a pain in the a*** !

First off... check the vac lines.
Play around with the idle speed.
Check the pcv.

Though what fixed it for me was replacing the inhibitor switch which sits on the lower left of the transmission looks like a grey/white plastic piece. Common problem they build up junk and water and stuff up the contacts. Usually round $90 from ford. Check that out.

I've been experiencing the same problem with my car, wants to die if i leave it in neutral, have to quickly chuck it in gear and give it some gas on the changes down. Bad idle too, might be worth looking at the idle control valve (idle speed controller, someone correct me if they're not the same thing), there's a tech doc, I've just got too get off my a** and take a look at the car.

Anyway this might help you out? documents.php?d=23
