Both will work roughly the same if the Pod is done properly. Check out this Tech Doc done by Lukey: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23157
Panel filters are roughly the same price as good Pod filters and are a lot easier to install. As for the noise factor, Pod filters definately sound nicer but if all you want is a nice sounding air intake and you're not fussed about the air flow then just shove a $39 SAAS Pod filter right onto the end of your intake pipe. Personally I would go a K&N Panel filter for performance and ease of installation.

Noise is mostly pod, but it isnt really much.
Performance between the 2 will be stuff all.

I think Pods have a greater surface area and therefore potential to flow more, but having said that K'n'N make very high quality panels too.

Since you have an ED falcon 6cyl this is what i would recommend!!!!

1) K&N panel Filter $80

2) EA MPI intake Tube from the TB to airbox. This pipe dosen't reduce in diameter at the airbox connection side. wreckers $10

3) XH ute intake snorkel. There are DOCS on how to fit it. $30-40.

Cheers.....
