Sounds like either a heavy right boot, or something is seriously outta whack, like a slipping auto, clogged fuel injectors/pump or even a dodgy o2 sensor. Run a code scan on the car, see if it says any sensors are out of range!

Cheers

maintain regularly, replace air filter with a more free flowing one, even take the big rear muffler out, get a scan or even have the ecu updated, we done all this to mums car and it's been a much better car to drive, getting around 650k's to a tank on highway and about 450-500 around town,

i always run 95 octane at a minimum if im getting $20 or more (sometimes im very tight for cash before pay day) and i usually run 91 octane without the ethanol if i can find a servo with the normal stuff but the 95 makes a big difference on economy

i wouldnt be suprised if you have the same issue mum had when we first got the car they pumped out so many cars and didnt have enough ecus programmed so they would throw in an untuned ecu with just the basic stuff on it an slap a sticker on the windscreen saying it needs to be done alot wer missed and this was the main reason why mums used to chew alot of fuel, that info actually came from my uncle who works a metro ford in brisbane when it comes to fards old and new big or small he knows whats wrong with 99% of them from factory and allready knows how to fix them, like the clunking noise in the diff of the xr6t and v8's from bf 2 onwards can be fixed by tightening the crown wheel up they leave them loser then previous ones because too many people wernt haveing enough worn parts in the rear in the ba's. so yeah basically id get your ecu scanned for codes, have it updated and generally that should fix 90% of the issue, i remember a mates xr6 would allways feel real doey between 2000rpm and 3000rpm felt like it took forever to get there turned out his 02 sensor was gone and was telling the ecu you pump a heap of fuel in all the time,. also try getting hold of a bottle of liqui moly injector cleaner i use it all the time in my old datsun and nothing has been gumming up in the carb anymore, but i do suggest doing the 2 step system with it one for the tank the other is in a pressure pack can to be sprayed infront or behind the tb depending on an available hole to do so and just unload a full can into the intake while engine is at about 2-3000rpm it foams up cleans all the crap out makes a stomach churning smell but god does it work like magic.

i hope they fix it for you, my eb is a never ending case of mystery problems like once it gets hot and you slam the lod pedal down it overfuels you can smell the fuel badly, and when takeing off from a stop when hot it you jump on the loud pedal hard it stalls, death rattle in the gearbox, not dropping back to first when at a stop, horn randomly goes off when it feels like, fuel tank gets fuller the more you drive, it's a never ending story oh yer and the ecu makes a bad humming noise like you hear from power sub stations.
