Hey guys,

Just replaced my relay and pump today because i was having some funny issues and the pump was old.

Issues prior to replacing pump and relay:

- Got home one night, parked and switched car off as usual. Woke up in the night to the sound of my pump priming. Thought WTF and disconnected the battery with a case of cbf at 3am. Found out that it would do it sometimes if i switched off and removed the key too fast.

- Next issue i got was one morning (only a couple days after the first issue) and went to start the bastard and no prime! Sat there for a while jiggling the key back and forth between acc and on and all of a sudden the fuel pump decides to prime. Thought about what happened but was too late for work to do anything about it.

- Yesterday i was on my way to work in the morning when i turned the corner to my work and the car died. I quickly switched it off and back on while still rolling in gear and it ticked over and kept going on its way. Did this once more before i got to work.

-Yesterday afternon after work, went down to the car to head home and NO PRIME AGAIN!! Jiggled around like before but no cigar this time. Went and replaced the relay and pump today and she fired up fine first time. Then i had to do some driving for work and the car cut out on me again. I thought it could be something to do with my stereo so i disconnected it. Still doing it. Then i got stranded out the front of council because it wouldnt prime, then all of a sudden it decides to play ball and fires up and drives back to work fine.

I believe it is shorting somehow, causing the relay to trip, killing my fuel supply.
What is connected to the relay that could cause it?
No modifications have been made to the fuel system.

Cheers
Sam

computer turns the relay on and it runs the pump... fuel pump relay you changed is the green one under the header tank?

They had issues in the barrels where they'd get a dodgy connection and cause power loss to accy items and that... Are you losing power to any other dash items and such? Seems odd you giggling the key makes it work is all...

Next thing to do is wait for it to cut out and with the head of a friend jog the key to on and check for power at the pump and then back to the relay, then check power into the relay, then check signal is getting to the relay, then check the computer is operating it...

Each section will be hard to check if the problem fixes itself mid diagnosis...

Cheers,
Tim

I believe you may be right about the barrel timmy.
All my gauges die when this happens also.
Yep green one.

And this is where my frustration lies!
The car wants more attention! So it pretends something is wrong to get attention!
Attention whore....

I will give what you say a try next time it happens.

If you are loosing power to other parts sounds like your barrel is acting up... You got an easily available spare to try?

Get some new shear bolts off ford... nock the other ones out and do a new one up on the but don't shear the bolts off... Just drive around like that for a few days in case it is d**k too... Seems to be a semi-common fault... We have 4 ED's between my old man and brothers and we have had two go...

Cheers,
Tim

Check the bakelite disc on the back of the barrel, where all the power connections are - that disc is held in by the crimps in the barrel body, it and/or the connections can go loose.

Yep, chipped.
Doesn't matter though, does the same thing chip or not.
And yes the chip is fine, terminals clean.
I think timmy and snap have hit the nail on the head.
Drove the thing last night and it decided it wanted to work completely fine.
The randomness leads me more to believe it is the barrel.
Will be able to tell you all soon, pulling out the barrel this arvo and getting some new bolts from ford.
Cheers

Fixed it!
There was a tiny amount of corrosion on the ecu relay which was causing the random cutouts!
Cheers for the help guys!
