My old 97 Fairmont used about 12.8 Lt per 100k around town, which was reasonable for a large family sedan. I found slipping the auto into neutral down hills and so on definitely saved on fuel consumption. Just don’t accidentally put it into to reverse it ain’t pretty.

Yeah hit reverse once at about 40km an hour gear box made a shocking bang and stalled instantly. Restarted all right and didn’t seem to cause any long term problems. Not recommended anyone tries this.

my mate told me constantly putting it into neutral was bad for the transmission, but i did notice more economy on the eff. trip in the BA, any transmission experts who know?

You must drive down LOTS of hills

Not sure how it works with autos but with manuals when you are down shifting and the revs get above a certain level the injectors stop injecting fuel, so you are saving fuel... so the lession is dont put it in neutral to save down hills if you own a manual, because in neutral the ECU will put a certain amount of fuel in to keep the car idling.

Yeah thats interesting to hear about the manual scenario. Anyone found that using optimax fuel seems to get a few more k's out of a tank?
