Hey

Just wondering if anyone out there has done this, and what the gains would be in a 5 speed EL if i changed my diff from a 3.23 open wheeler to a 3.45lsd xr item

I'm after strip times really..

Any help is appreciated.

Ive always wondered if the amount your speedo is out after changing diff's might roughy represent the gain in acceleration you have recieved. eg

When I went from 3.08 to 3.23 at 100km/hr im really only doing 96k/h

Regardless of speedo readings, could it be fair to assume the car would now be at 100km/h in the time it previously would have only been at 96?

Aint really thaught this over very strongly, but it would assume for one that the faster your going, the greater impact the change in diff ratio would have (yes? no?), I dunno something to think about.

Having said all that the diff between my ratios above is probably equal to the difference you would be looking at, and the difference is noticeable although not mind blowing.

LSD would additionally help however if you were loosing traction when launching.

f**k yes!!
one of the best mods i have ever done.
acceleration improvement is ALOT better. Especially off the line. Instead of spinning the wheels, the lsd just grips up and shoots you off.

But if u are after strip times, why dont u just get nissan skyline gears and a locker? Would be alot faster then a 3.45 lsd.

I had a 3.23 open and currently have 3.45LSD. The gearing differece is minimal to say the least.. Acceleration does improve slightly however, but that's due to power being put down on to two wheels.

I went from 3.08 to 3.45 and noticed..... no noticeable difference - as others have said, you will gain from better grip by going to LSD so in that respect it's probably worth it.

Yeah I agree with one drone. I did the same diff swap and the ratio change didn't do much - it's more about getting off the line. At the time I hadn't long had my new engine installed and I couldnt give it much in first as it broke far too easily. With the LSD it is MUCH better and now you can nail it in gear and tear straight to redline (largely minus the wheelspin)

I didn't compare mine directly with quarter times, but something to be aware of is where abouts you shift. I found when I went with the 3.23 I was shifting into 4th JUST before the traps and so that gear shift may have been costing me a nano-poof of a second. With the 3.45 you'd probably already be in 4th and well on your way so it should be quicker.
I now hit the speed limiter in 4th before hitting the traps, but that's another story :)

Right.. so by the sounds of it, the ratio change from 3.25 to 3.45 wont make much difference.

the LSD will make a big difference, i've experienced this before when i converted my VL 5 speed from an open wheeler to an lsd.

So if I want lower ET's should I look at 3.7's or even 3.9's?
