Running on lpg i assume? The backfires can be caused by things like plugs leads or distrubutor cap/rotor. But leaking lpg smells like bad eggs, so you may have something more serious going on?

I don't know why but I hear about alot of LPG cars backfiring. I guy at tafe had the safe problem on his LPG VL, and it got worse untill it started blowing up his pod filter's.

If it's on LPG then look at plugs, leads, air intake/vacuum leaks, mixture too lean, timing.
A number of things can cause it, best to be a bit more specific on fuel type and when it's back firing.

well the only other thing that could cause that smell is the catylytic converter, maybe its s**t itself and partially blocking your exhaust pipe causing some gasses to backfire.

Bad egg smell is usualy caused by a stuffed cat. converter, because the car has been run on leaded petrol at some stage, for whatever reason.

Backfires on petrol are often caused by retarded timing, faulty ignition, and sometimes air leaks.

Check/replace your coil/coil pack, as I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the coil. Replaced it and it made a hell of a difference, like a new car!!

hmm i just got a new exhaust system, including a high flow cat and it didnt seem to make a difference to the backfires or egg smell.

Definately sounds like an electrical problem, is it misfiring at all?
As in running on 5 cylinders?

when was the last time the sparkplugs were change?

looks like that particular plug is stuffed completely.
the only way it would seized if there is buildup of hard carbon causing the plug to fused with the combustion chamber wall.
