yeh, I had a dream last nite that I bought an AU and bought an exhaust for it instead of spending money on extractors for my BA (thts the short version basically), was playing on my mind all morning so I went down, and got some pacies and a high flow cat put in. I'm very pleased, deeper rumble and much more noticeable power. Only thing is, it sounds supercharged!!! It has a loud whining sound (which if I don't punch it too much) is very audible, ne1 know what it is? It isn't rough like a steering pump for instance, sounds identical to a supercharger...only not. Also, they put the heat shield back on, is it better on or off?

Ok, any ideas, starting to worry me now, its very loud, as rev's build up, the whining gets a higher frequency, then goes lower when it changes gear etc. Its too dark to see anything tonite, my power steering fluid is on the low mark but theres still heaps left. Could that be it?

Gilmer drives and straight cut timing gears gives you that whining noise.I dont know what that whining hoise would be,sounds maybe like a p/s pump?I would only remove a heat shield if it wouldnt secure properly. They help prevent the underside of the bonnet paint from drying and cracking and peeling and also help reduce engine bay temperatures.

Dunno what it is man, but I have this persistent wine/whistling noise sorta thing that is driving me nuts - so I know how ya feel.
I've changed all the pulleys/bearings to no avail.

is this sound happenning on your EB? still don't know what it is. Tomorrow i'll stick the video camera in the bay so you can all here the sound when I rev it and decide what it might be. Of course this will require another person, god damn drive-by-wire throttle...

I looked in the engine and theres no way I can pinpoint where its coming from, I think the sound is coming straight from the motor itself, There has always been a very soft whining that was barely noticeable, my guess is that the extractors have brought out the sound to be more noticeable. Well as it isn't causing any problems, I'm just gonna ignore it till my next service.

Take off the belt and see if it's still there?
That will narrow it down.
