How do you get the harmonic balancer off a BA i6. Engine still in the car. Do I need to remove the radiator? Do I turn CCW or CW?

ccw, remove the fans and radiator, get a long bar and socket and you can use the starter to loosen the bolt

Cheers coupe. I should of been more definitive on what needed turning lol but it seems you understood my jibberish.

Well it was kind of obvious. Harmonic Balancer, can only mean Harmonic Balancer. I know you can just brute strength like the incredible fukn hulk that s**t off, so I merely asked which direction the bolt / whatever needed turning.

Like I said, never assume.

You may have thought it obvious you were talking about the bolt. I have seen people try to unscrew the actual balancer before.

That comment doesn't do much to inspire confidence.

You dont need to take the radiator out mate, just the fans and thats all the room you will need. if you get a long handle on your spanner that reaches to the floor, take your splash tray off and have the handle to the ground, then turn the key just a lil to crank it enuff and the force against it will actually loosen the bolt for you. Someone might be able to explain it a bit better than me but thats what my mech did when we replaced mine (more info in my build thread with pics) Make sure you got the correct puller to remove the balancer with as well (again pics of it in my thread)

the reason i suggested to take the radiator out is if he needs to pull the balancer off with a puller there is a chance he could hit the radiator and damage it. better off removing it than having to buy a new one
