When I did my head over christmas, I used a degree gauge - looks like a round indicator that fits inline with your socket extension - setup the arm against a fixed object, setup the indicator to zero, tighten bolt to 90 degrees - a bit slow, but accurate.
The torque wrench is calibrated every 12 months, so that was pretty accurate as well . . . .
