While the head is off i would be changing the coolant pipe that go's from behind the water pump, around the engine block to the passengers side, to the heater core etc. Because if that pipe rusts out & leaks you would have to take the head off to change it. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
PS. Use the au head gasket.

I thought you should never use water in our motors due to the head being an alloy and the block steel.... or whatever they are made out of :P

I see where his coming from, basically in better infomation:

Use water to start with, so you can see if there is any leaks and fix them up, otherwise you will end up using all your coolant and you will have to get another bottle of it.

And I don't think you really need to run it for 1000km's.... you just need to use water initially so you can see to any leaks that might appear. After your sure that there is no leaks, disconnect the bottom radiator hose, let the water, reconnect it, add your pre-mixed/coolant + Garden water and you'll be ready to go.

Saiken, you had to be the one smart a** out of all that :P

Running water initially is to remove all the dirt out of the system as well and to find out leaks without wasting precious coolant.

phong =P~

main reason to run water is to let the head seal with out any chemicals.

Also turns out the head gasket screwed up because the radiator was full of casting sand.... so i've fixed the cause of the problem... not just the problem =D
