My EL XR6 has turned from a headache to a migraine, and I've recently been losing LOTS of coolant. I.E - Have to refill every day. I let my mate sus it out for me, as he thought my radiator was leaking, and it turns out my head gasket is blown. How much can I expect to pay? I've been quoted $700-1,500 from my mechanic, but it sounds a bit steep.

Cheers.

An avererage fix will cost at least 1000, due to the time and alike.

If you do it yourself you will save alot of money. If you get a mechanic to do it you will be paying alot in labor. Either way, be sure to use a AU MLS gasket and AU head bolts.

Headgasket replacements are expensive since it is time consuming and a bit tedious, however not that hard of a job.

If you are not mechanically minded and like the security of having a professional do it for you with a warranty, then expect to dig deep into your wallet.

Genuine Head bolts, $77.00 Part number AU 6065C (from EA to AU III all the same), the Head gasket kit (includes all gaskets needed) will set you back $330.00 Genuine part number ER 6079A. I am sure that you will be able to get one cheaper at an after market store like Super Cheap or AutoBarn.

Oh ok, I might look into doing it myself.

Anyone know of any guides available? I'll have a read and see if I can do it.

Cheers for the replies :)

As Papa Smurf suggested. Have a read through the doco...there are plenty of pictures...however if you can't be bothered reading the thread, you can always skip to page 10 of the thread and download the pdf file I compiled.

Good luck :D

Thanks papa & phong. Looks like I'll be in way over my head.

My mate knows a mechanic, and has offered to do the job for $900, including crack testing my engine.

I'm going to go through with it, and his shop is about 15-20k's away.

Should I be driving it there? Or do I need to get it toed.
