GET AN IMPACT SOCKET

I grabbed 3 14mm sockets from my toolbox

Image

The one on the left is a cheap single hex - it will prbably break before the bolts came undone

The one in the middle is a 1/2 decent double hex, but chances are it will round the bolt.

The one on the right is an impact socket. I could undo 1000 headbolts using that without it breaking or rounding a bolt.

yeh, I started using the middle one on the headbolts cause the repco guy said it would be fine and partially rounded one of the head bolts. Then I started using the one on the left and although I ended up getting all of the headbolts off, 2 sockets cracked in the process, shouldn't have wasted my time with anything but the impact sockets.

yeah well the impact socket worked.. but only with an extenstion bar with another metal tube on the end and two of us turning it!
and here is the damage.. small eated area from the water gallery through to no.1
I don't understand why my auto manual tell me I have to remove the inlet manifold to do this.. or to loctite the bolts.. seems like some s**t advice. You can see how close the gallery is to the cylinder though eh!

yeah can't believe how close the water gallery is to the cylinder.. but yeah, it aint that bad. At least it's just poor coolant thats eaten it and not something weird.

Head didn't have any obvious cracks, valve recession doesn't look that bad either really concidering 300,000kms and LPG.

Got it dipped today and crack testing tomorrow!
My gasket and bolts should arrive soon. Meanwhile I'll busy myself with twin electric fans and makeing a shift kit.
