Hi i have an 1996 EL 6cyl and have recently put a wade 977b regrind cam in it. After fitting the cam had really bad chain rattle through out the rev range and have now replace the chain and guides but still have a rattle from 2000rpm to 2300rpm. Im positive its not lifters as it only happens around that rev range. Have fitted the 2nd set of shims for the regrind cam. If anyone has had this problem would much appreciate it if you could help me out.

Probably not related but make sure you give it a bottle of engine flush and a oil change with a quality oil. If you havnt already.

you reset the chain tensioner properly?

my brother inlaws ed had a rattle at around the same rpm, it was a loose cam bolt through the cam gear. im doubting yours would be that, if it still does it after new timing set and tensioners

I have done a flush and change oil and filter, the cam bolt is tight and the tenisoner is released properly. I don't think it's valve guides as it doesn't use oil or blow smoke. And it has all new chain guides and chain. Could it be the hla's.

sometimes the hla's take 100-200kms to quieten down, a decent drive usually does it.

Incase you don't see where i'm heading with that, You can't asume it's not chain rattle just because it has a new chain and guides.

Head has never been pulled off since iv owned it for 3years and it's got standard springs but the noise is coming from the front. Could the cogs be worn causing the noise.

I'd say being a 96 model the heads been off at least once.
You're also useing original valve springs that have been going since 96.

First step is new valve springs. Even just new XR spec ones from crow.

As far as the gears them selves, I would assume that would have been checked when the chain and guides were done.

i had a rattle like that. it was the timing chain rubbing on the timing case slowly grinding away until it cracked through. it only came on around the 2200rpm mark. that car no longer works now. get it sorted asap

I don't think it has any thing to do with ignition timing but I notice yesterday when I changed the cam timing back to standard the nosie is now starting at around 1800 to 2100 so I don't know why it would change like that
