Pull a lead off, put a spark plug in it, hold the end of the spark plug down onto a good earth such as the head, note do this with a pair of insulated pliers, get someone to crank the engine over, watch for a spark.

It is best to do this in the shade, if the car is park in the sun you may want to push it under some shade or wait until dusk.

the only time my car ever done anything like that was when my fuel pump died, but that was ages ago and i cant remember if it was back firing when i tried to start but it definantly coughed and splutted and never started, try tapping it with a hammer, it it starts for a few seconds and then dies you will need a new pump.

otherwise the only time my car backfired when it wouldnt start was when there was water n my dizzy and it wouldnt start and the engine flooded and then wouldnt clear up, we had to 'turn off' the injectors and keep trying to start it until it was dry then turn em back on and she started first time.

what does anyone else think???
