I have this strange vibration in th EF 6cyl. Starts around 4400 rpm. Sort of goes through the majority of the front end incl. steering wheel. Did it with the auto in and still does it with the manual in.

Could it be the balancer? Engine mount?

Help appreciated.

Cheers.
Sam.

Could anyone shed some light on this issue?

Sam could be anything thats a tough one to sort out without seeing the car you will just have to start at the front and work your way to the gearbox? and rule it out along the way

harmonic balancer?

is it just rpm or speed related?

rpm related. so it wouldnt be the driveshaft. im thinking harmonic balancer also.

how would the car react to a shagged engine mount?

i havent tried free revving to see but i dont think it would be the flywheel, gearbox or anything like that. it did the same thing when the auto was in...

have the engine running and rev it while looking at the engine.
id imagine if the vibration is bad enough you should be able to see the cause.

reving an internal combustion engine to that rpm completely unloaded isn't really the best idea... I'd be sticking a mirror down there and checking the rubber in the harmonic balancer and making sure it hasn't come adrift... I have seen v8 ones do it... I suppose the 6cyl ones have the rubber band in it too...

Cheers,
Tim

yeah i know its not a good thing to do. thats why i havent done it. never have because i dont like that idea.

i think it might just be the balancer. They do have that rubber dampener thing in between. i noticed while doing the convo that a smidge was poking out...

how hard are they to replace? i have at least one spare that i never had issues with on the previous car. may as well try that rather than buying a newy??

Cheers.
Sam.

yeah thats the go... if you've got a manual you will find it easier to crack the bolt holding it on anyway... put it in a tall gear (5th) and decent breaker bar you can swing off and you'll be right... Not sure whether these are right or left handed thread now... :? A rattle gun would work too but with the motor in the car space my be limited...

You will need a puller to get it off though IIRC... I think they are an interference fit... :? Been a while since I changed the seal behind mine now...

Cheers,
Tim

Would a puller clear the radiator? And I would assume to locate there would be a keyway or similar to give you your tdc.? Yeah do have a manual in so it'll be alot less heartache I would imagine..

I'll have a squiz tomorrow and if it's not that, I'm out of ideas... Engine mount makes much less sense than the harmonic balancer.

Ill update after I make an inspection..

Cheers.
Sam.

Have to remove the radiator. Thread on the bolt is right handed and yep the balance only goes on one way due to a locating slot.
With the radiator out there is enough room to use one of these with a ratchet on the end.

Yeah a mates got one of those pullers so I'll have to pinch that off him.

Oh well... Gives me a reason to do a system flush afterwards.

Thanks guys. Ill update tomorrow...

Quick pic of balancer. Yeah they do have the ribber piece inside. You can kind of see the rubber beginning to protrude outwards... Hopefully this is all the problem is.

My i6 had a vibration in it at between 800 and 1500 rpm... turned out to be a couple of stuffed spark plugs...
