When I bought my Fairmont Ghia, it already had the ported head, "stage 2 cam and head", extractors etc...
Im interested in getting a J3 chip sooner rather than later, yet, there would be no point as I don't know the specifics of the engine.
How can I learn the specs needed to be able to buy the J3 chip and let it run efficiently, without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars?

Cheers,
Russ.

Or does anyone know of a tuning place in the Western Sydney/Hills area of NSW that would be able to at least give me some advice?

without receipts the only way to know what has been done is pull the engine apart and see, unless you can contact the previous owner and ask them??

Thing is, he lost the receipts or something...
Pffft.

What specs would I need for the J3 chip coding?
Just the cam?

imo for best results get a custom dyno tune.. dont waste your time on a pre programed chip, as you will get unknown results from an unknown head and cam..

if it was stock, then a pre programed chip will probably work fine..

It's so irritating... I can't do anything.
I was going to convert to manual down the track, but then I'd need a manual ECU, and I wouldn't be able to tune it right.
It's so CRAP...

Custom dyno tune, how much am I looking at, and where abouts?
I'll have to remember for down the track.

what do you mean? wouldnt be able to tune it right? take it to somewhere that can tune the j3 chip, being manaul or auto doesnt change anything they just run it and play around with air fuel mxture and timing to get the best out of it?

Yeah, but I mean if I was to convert from auto to manual, Id need a manual ecu. And if I get a stock ecu that hasn't been flashed prior, I wouldnt be able to get it spec'd right, because I dont the right info for my engine work etc.

To get a proper tune done you need it on the Dyno. You won't need the specs etc. to do the tune as people like Joe know their game.

You can't flash tune an E series ECU, you will need a J3 chip, grab and SCT chip, you won't go wrong.

Contact Joe at Cresent Motorsport, He will set you in the right direction.

If you get a j3 chip as suggested you can get a manual program put on it so you won't require manual ECU.

Your only other option would be to look at the cam as they usually engrave some sort of specs into the end of a cam when they regrind....usually intake and exhaust duration. I have a regrind one here that reads something like IN XXX EX XXX (don't remember numbers off the top of my head). Is a bit of a PITA to do though as obviously have to take off rocker cover/cam gear I think (can't remember what end it is on?)

Lost receipts.....sounds dodgey. I think I can produce every receipt for every service since buying my car lol, purely for when it was sold.
