Well the XR6 is placed on top of the ladder for Ford 6 perfomance cylinder cars.
It would have been a bit un fair if the ghia got the same power output as the XR6 as it is not intended to be a sperfomance car so ford decided to give it an edge over other cars, hence the 1kw difference, it is not big but it is still an advantage and it is still their on paper. Even though when these cars were manufactured not all of them would be 163kw 164kw respectively, nothing is perfect.


About the diference in mods?? I am not sure but i am guessing exhaust :?:

XR6 is lighter than a fairmont ghia tho?

Better power to weight.

My head reads 95DA-6059-AA

Its a July 98 EL Ghia....

After reading other posts this indicates that its not the hybrid engine?

Thats the same first 4 characters as my Futura, yet you should've gotten an XR engine?

Do you have the tickford wings anywhere? red rocker cover?

Signs point that you do have an XR6 engine, if you still are un-sure either take down your engine number and call up ford (it'l be a hassle) or line up a mate's Fairmont (non-ghia). :lol:

all el fairmont ghias got the tickford engine, if ures is an EL and it a ghia like ure thing says then its a tickford engine

I'll have a closer look at the engine. But the rocker cover is definatley red, and all ghias have that engine so I cant see why its not. Unless the previous owner blew it up. But the cars only done 120k kms.

It better be an xr6 engine otherwise Ford will be getting a call...

Im thinking those that have found the head part number 95DA-6059-AA are not actually looking at the head. You are looking at the part number for the timing chain cover, as this is the part number for that... :shock:

As I said, the part numbers for the head are found on the head, behind the upper idler pully. On pre-hybrid heads:

Standard I6 is 94DA
XR6 is 94DT - Plus has the tickford wings logo right in the middle of the head.

Both these numbers are right behind the pully, and you might need to pull the black belt cover off. The numbers are stamped in pretty large bold letters.

For hybrid heads:

Standard I6 is 96DA-xxxx-xx
XR6 is 96DT-xxxx-xx - Plus has the tickford wings logo right in the middle of the head.

Once again these numbers are behind the pully, but as the part numbers are larger, they start from more in the middle of the head. You still might need to pull the belt cover off...

So if you have a post Feb 98 build, and have gotten a 95DA part number off the engine, check it again. You might have looked at the wrong part... :o

Ford tell me according to their computers, there are only 2 part numbers for EF/EL heads... 94Dx and 96Dx... So unless their computers are wrong, you should only be getting a part number starting with one of the 2 years listed...

I looked directly under the black plastic cover, above the pully...I'll take it off and see properly.

Yes, the timing chain cover part number is the only one visible when you look like that... Cos you cant see the base of the head without removing the cover...

96DT! which is the Hybrid engine...

Now what does that mean? I want a cam....is this difficult?

Ok removed the belt/power steering pump cover, and found, a 96DA head code.

My March 98 EL Futura

- Head Code '96DA'.
- Body coloured engine bay.
- Unpainted block (unless 'rust' is a new colour).
- Firm rattle free fitting power steering pump cover, not loose as has been mentioned.
- Black painted rocker cover, not unpainted alloy as mentioned.
- Not one of the '~20 XR6 donks in a GLi/Futura' :(

Seems Ford made more and more cost cutting measures as time went on in '98.

So I feel I can safley say, that my initial suspicion was correct, I've got an EL Hybrid engine.

Wade may not be able to help (I've been PM'ing '10sixty6' the local FM Wade rep). Maybe JMM / ITS can help.

And as above, you CAN'T read the head code with the belt cover on, take it off.

If you mean VCT. No it was never offered in either the EF or the EL.

The AU was the first Falcon to be offered with VCT. Of course the BA now has duel VCT as standard.

sorry about that mate when i said "No not necessarily" i was answering another question but data_mine posted 2 minutes before me hence made it look like i was correcting him, which i wasn't. Sorry about the mix up :wink:

no, i was meaning the XR6 engine with the red rocker.

I knew about the VCT engine being introduced in au hence the name AU XR6 vct :)
