My AU motor has been using oil between changes for the last 6 months. Prior to that there was non lost between oil changes.

I had assumed stem seal were tired but I have recently put a reco head on it and it is still using oil. There is no smoke apparent out the exhaust.

I put a catch can in the PCV line and after a week (around 300k's) of driving I have a 100ml of oil in it. I have checked the PCV is working correctly. I have checked the rocker cover for fumes when hot and there is none.

Does anyone have a theory on this?

its a bit of a long shot but..
what oil are you using?
the reason i ask is i used gulf western oil in my au engine when i first got it running and it lost/burnt (but no smoke) a litre of oil in 1000kms..and the oil went dark fast.
which freaked me out

so i switched to penrite hpr5 (5w-40)semi synthetic and it doesnt use any oil at all after 5000kms its still full and stays fairly clean..

i thought the pcv would stop oil being sucked into the manifold?
are you sure the pcv is ok?
other than oil i would try a compression test.
but not seeing fumes or any signs of blow by this is a tricky one..

What colour is the PCV Valve??? If it is a black one, change it to the grey one. First series AU's had black ones and ford changed to the grey ones because of oil consumption complaints.

Just got a AU metal one today to change it from the EF metal one I had in there.
$6 for the PCV and $21 for the O ring I wrecked changing it
I am using Shell 20W50 at the moment.

I have used the same Shell oil before and it did not use any so I am not sure it is oil related. See how it goes with the new PCV I guess. I gave it a shot of Wynes tuneup incase its a stuck ring...

You using Shell 20W50????? Why?????

Does it have LPG????

Ford specs for engine oil for the AU's was 5W or 10W30 and if fitted with LPG, use 15W40.
Using 20W50 oil will take ages for the oil to get to and go through the HLA's.

Yes LPG, no problems with startup noise.

My I6 has been doing the same thing. Oil goes black fast and after 5000ks when I do an oil change its just below the minimum on the dipstick.
I was using Penrite HPR 15 but now I'm using Valvoline Pro Blend 15w40 and its still doing it.

HPR 15 iirc is 15W60. If the donk turns the oil black quickly, the donk isn't in real good nick. Suggests worn rings/bore.

this is telling you that the penrite is not removing as much contamination as the gulf stuff.
You dont want the oil to stay clean, if it is, it's not working properly

i agree but internally the engine is very clean..
and when i say fairly clean i mean after 5000km the oil is dark but still transparent. compared to almost pitch black after 1000km from the gulf western oil.
yet again the gulf western may have cleaned the internals of the engine..
as i had not had the engine open untill after i started using the penrite..

my AU2 uses a bit of oil, Its about due for a change and its down to juuust under halfway between the full and fill lines. its a darkish brown, but still has a bit of golden tint when its on the paper towel. I used mobil S. iirc about 10/40 weight.

My oil consumption seems to have tamed substantially since I changed the PCV valve.

higher grade oil will also lift oil pressure which in turn will lead to pushing oil into where it doesn't belong.

converted gas vehicles have half the life expectancy than their later model e-gas counterparts this relates to valve seating mostly but not only with stainless seats.

i broke a tired cfi 3.9 with magnatec but since switching to penrite hpr semi syn has proved the best oil i've ever used.

what happens is as the motor gets older the oil pressure drops and thats why you need thicker oil. if the oil pressure drops unnoticeably then your unwittingly causing damage to usually (but not always) the top end of your vehicle untill you upgrade the oil viscosity and regenerate the oil pressure. too thicker oil will on the hand will promote more oil loss aswell as due to the aforementioned increase in oil pressure.

oils ain't oils.

i almost got my 3.9 cfi registered with a snapped ring on no.1 by adding 60 grade oil with numerous additives. not only did it reduce smoke considerably but reduced consumption aswell even with broken rings !

conclusion: choose your oil well based upon mileage and duty cycle.
