after a few starts the whine has died down a lot, can barely hear it now - hopefully after a few more starts it'll be right. i'll keep an eye on it though

MM if the car is hot and having trouble starting, and the alt is charging, which it sounds it is there is a problem with either a the starter motor or B. the wiring tothe starter motor
A is the most likley cause

Got a starter motor today from a mate, $130 for a reconditioned one which was far cheaper than anything else, got quoted from $145 for a secondhand, up to $250 for a reconditioned one with a 3 month warranty and got quoted $275 for a newie.
Put it in myself so no labor charges.....

although when i started it it has a bit of a whine, just wondering if it takes a few starts for it to embed or if it should get a bit of lube???? Any suggestions?

You serious?

We just brought a couple of AU ones from fords direct, $110 each (trade price) as they can be modified to fit clevelands.
The AU ones fit all models from EA onwards

$110 for a starter motor is a fair bit less than trade price, cause a mate of mine who works at ford gets me trade price and its a lot more expensive than that. It was $130 cash job through a guy who overhauls starters for ford, and trade on a reco'd one is $176.

BA are different to AU and earlier.

i can get the new bosch starter to suit xp-au for $100.
They're much better than the ones on the ea/eb's and sound better too.
offyaguts - the starter brushes are probably just wearing in, which explains the slight noise.

I've modified an ef starter to bolt to my 351 also.
