what timing advance does a stock el xr6 come with, and what is the limit before pinging usually, my engine was advanced 40 deg as stock, is this normal? i thought it should have been much less, car has been in the family since new and no one has touched it from factory. also the cam had over 0.500 lift, is this normal as well? or is my car a freak? anyone heard of this happening before? with the mods in my sig i pulled 127rwkw and 340nm of torque on a dyno which people think gives conservative figures....

standard timing is 10 degrees in diagnostic mode.

how did you measure the timing - was it in diagnostic mode or did you just stick a timing light on the engine at idle?

How do you know it has 500 thou lift (stock was 480). Most cams with 500 lift will get a little better that 127 with your mods.

edit: wrong thread... bizarre...

But while I'm here, diagnostic mode can be activated by earthing the top left pin in the diagnostic port.
Revs will rise, then when they drop, measure the timing.

yeah used timing light, pinged at 44. can the timing usually get that far? done by a reputable mechanic.

because i got the cam changed and power went backwards(122rwkw). just by measuring it with verniers across the biggest part of the lobe it was 2mm bigger than the stage 2 that went in, then we got it docked up properly...

a stocker with these mods shouldnt achieve those figures right?

It would have to be a very healthy stocker.

Were either of the cams regrinds? 2mm is 80 thou which would mean your stage 2 would be only 420 thou lift.

How is he measuring this 44 degrees of timing though? To set the timing you need to put the engine into diagnostic mode wich will lock it at 10 deg. You then move it to the timing mark on the cover, and for every 1.5mm you move it it will advance ~1 degree. I wouldnt go any more than 5 degrees advance over stock, and make sure you use 98 fuel if you do.
